Default What is that "open wheel race-car"?

I ran an event a month ago with the Empire Sports Car Association, a good group and a well run event. They only have 3 classes which are divided into R compound and street tire groups. I was a bit confused by their write up so I said put me in a class where I will have some competition, how about "B". I guess they thought that was not fair to me since I had a 4 cylinder car, so they moved me to "C". Here is the write up in their news letter: "Mark Mervich, a new member with a Ford powered open wheel race-car, took 2nd on Sat". I got beat by a 300hp V6 Stalker(a super 7 clone). I will be back next year to straight them out.

You can try to make a street car into an autocrosser or you can do a lot less work and make a race car into a great autocrosser

I always get asked "what's it go in it?"...when I tell them "Pinto", the look of disappointment is pretty amusing

I get that too until I tell them the power to weight ratio.

I tell them "1600 push rod ford from the Pinto and Fiesta"

I got the reply once "WOW that has a 3 cylinder in it???"

    "umm,, wrong Fiesta..."

Hopefully the Honda conversion FF's won't impress people any better when they say "Honda Fit"

They don't. The approving nods start coming back when you tell them about the mid 12 second quarter mile and the 140 mph top speed. I've been surprised by the total lack of interest by import tuner enthusiasts, even at car shows.

Even better when you tell them that they will wipe the floor with Corvettes, Porsches, and Ferraries!

In 1988 while instructing a Ferrari club event at Pocono prior to our RCCA races the next day, I had a guy with a 2 year old 308 talked into a race for "pink slips" against my RF81. I had the car unloaded and was suited up but the Ferrari club "brass" wouldn't let me on track with an open wheel car. To say I was dissapointed the race didn't happen is an understatement! The resale on the 308 would have funded my racing for quite a few years!

I think nowadays you could probably beat the 308 with any 2012 minivan.
