if my aging memory serves me correct, there are two oil return swirl pots. What is the advantage of one over the other. One was low with a skinny neck and small line connection. The second was fat on the bottom, taller and had a larger AN fitting.

It does if you for 1 have a round tank. And 2 the taller the tank the better aeration.
the last thing you want in an oil cooler is heavily-aerated oil; very poor heat transfer :-)Originally Posted by jrh3

We have used both with good results
What was the reason for the new design?
I honestly do not know. I would not be surprised if it was nothing more than ease of fabrication and cost.
