    Default Welcome to Thill

This is the FF section so I believe that accounts for the lack of responses to your query.
For a FA, I'd gear for a slowest corner around 45 mph (T5 & T11) and a top speed around 145 mph entering T1. Track record for a FA is 1:38.461 which is an average of 104.7 mph.
    hope that helps.

    Hi Joules,

I had the FA record for Thunderhill from about noon on the first SCCA day at the track until the next morning when Nancy James qualified. But I've been racing FF with Dave Jalen for about 15 years so FA is a dim memory. I ran a Ralt RT5 super Vee as Atlantic. I had the allowed 1835 motor, which peaks a lot lower than the Cosworth or Toyota, so I think my gearing would be useless to you. Dave mentioned 145 turning in to T1, which is a bit of an exaggeration. The Super Vee has a lot less drag than a "real" FA, so it gets up to about 142. The last time my car was run, it was visibly pulling away from a Swift 014 at that point every lap. I suspect the Swift was getting 135 or so. You should set 1st gear for the exit of T11 which is around 35. I hope this babble was some help.

    Mike

P.S. my Ralt is leading a simple life as a vintage car

Default What happened to the attachment???????

    Hi Folks,

Didn't we used to have a great table of tracks and gears as the attachment to this thread? Any idea what happened to it? The current attachment is a track layout...

    Thanks,

    Default Bainerd gearing

    Hi Cliff-

    Here's what I normally ran at BIR. (I have a 9:31 diff) 1st: 19:32, 2nd: 20:27, 3rd: 21:24, 4th: 24:24 (on the "new" 2..5mi course. Ran 25:24 on old 3 mi. with the mile long straight plus high banked turn 1 - flat out until T3!) Top sped? You'll be around 130.

Have fun there. Tony "Fubar" Foster and Ethan Mackey are very experienced there, talk to them when you get there. Tell I sent ya!

    Default Track Gearing

Hopefully I have attached an Excel doc I have with a bunch of gearing for different tracks. OK, so that didn't work. Is there a way to upload an Excel doc? If not is there somewhere I can place it. OR I can email a copy to anybody who wants one.

    Publish as PDF Document.

Step 1 Launch Excel. Open the Excel worksheet you want to publish.

Step 2 Click the "File" tab. Click the "Save As" icon.

Step 3 Click the down arrow in the "Save as type:" list box. Select "PDF" from the list of file types.

Step 4 Click on the "Standard (publishing or printing)" radio button labeled: "Optimize for."

Step 5 Type an appropriate name in the "File name" input box.

Step 6 Press the button labeled "Save" to create the PDF file.

1981 Crossle 45F with 9:31 R&P and about 60 lbs of ballast in the driver's seat.
I'll be running Toyo R888 vintage tires.

Sorry, I should have stated the track being you mentioned two. COTA has the 1K straight so the ratios I gave were for COTA.

Don't know if this will help with a Kent rather than a Honda but....
    Using a 9:31

    Default Runoffs @ Indy 2017

Anybody thinking way ahead to the Runoffs regarding gearing? The "Baseline_gearing" lists Indy road course (which configuration?) gears for a 10:31 as 18:32; 20:30; 23:29; 25:27 (26:25 for a 9:31).
That seems about right for a 3.7K ft straight to me given the Hoosier Radial is slightly taller than the bias plys (~3%??).
    Any thoughts?

FYI, Indianapolis Raceway Park is not the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It is the track west of Indy with the road course, drag strip, and 5/8 mile oval where the NHRA Nationals are held, among other events. It was renamed to O'Reilly Raceway Park and then renamed to Lucas Oil Raceway.

Default CFF at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course

    Hey Folks!

Totally newbie here. Have a 1978 FF with treaded Dunlops and 9:31 diff ratio. I'm planning on going to the SVRA Open Wheel fest at Indy in June.

I'm still learning how to change the gears, only have a few spares, and not much idea how to figure out what I'm going to need for the June weekend.

    Would sure appreciate any guidance.

    Thanks!

    Post Tires ?

How old are your Dunlop tires? How much time is on those tires.? When (date) were they first used ? How strong is your engine? When was the head on your engine removed, cleaned, valve springs checked, leak down? All would affect your gearing, particularly top gear.

    Thanks.

Don't know the exact age of the tires but they were first used in July 2015 and have perhaps 30 laps on them. Engine was rebuilt last year by Elite engines and has only testing miles on it. It's fresh.

And yes of course all those things—including personal preference—will affect the final gearing. I'm simply looking for a starting point.

    Default Portland Major Gearing

I looked in Jake's book and noted the starting point gears for Portland. Anyone have any thoughts on gearing for that configuration?
Jake's book states (9:31) and the old gumball Hoosier/GYs
    20:30
    22:29
    24:28
    25:26
The first gear is taller than a Willow Springs first. That seems pretty tall to me. The radial Hoosiers are a tad taller than the previous tire.
Anyone from the NW care to comment?

    Default Portland gears

Dave, Having raced at the Portland track several times each year for many years. Here are some considerations. Except during the very early racing season each year, the track will be using the chicane on the front straight. And the entry announcement usually states that the front chicane will or will not be used subsequently during the balance of the season. The chicane is often referred to as the "Festival Turns". Plan on them being used for your event. I can only give you the 9:31 gearing for the "better" Club Fords using the "front chicane" (Festival Turns). I would guess that the recommended gears for a "modern Ford" as in Formula F be one tooth LESS for each gear ratio. Here are the gears used for Club Ford: 18:33, 20:30, 22:28, 25:27. A word of warning-the front chicane can and will be a "cluster F..." on the opening start/lap of the race. Good luck, hope that you do well and have a great weekend.

Default portland gears with chicane and hoosier 60 radial

    Hi Dave,
See you there, as the RV hook-ups are scarce or non-existant, pit close by and we can share resources.
I hope to be there Thursday PM, and good luck to us getting in on Thursday evening.

A bit closer on gears . I was there last year running with the Hoosier spec tire, so this is close.
    17;33
    19;31
    22;29
    21;24
Not only is the chicane (Karen McCoy verified we are using the chicane) really tight, so is the right turn onto the back straight, so I have a lower 1st gear than you have seen. (I also have the lap record)

BE SURE TO BRING A MUFFLER !!!! It is mandatory per Portland state regulations.

I'm going to OWWC also and have been given this gearing as a suggestion from a FF driver that was there a year or two ago.
    19/32 22/30 24/28 25/26 with 9/31 final drive.
    Anyone have anything to add?

About Us
Since 2000, ApexSpeed.com has been the go-to place for amateur road racing enthusiasts, bringing together a friendly community of racers, fans, and industry professionals. We're all about creating a space where people can connect, share knowledge, and exchange parts and vehicles, with a focus on specific race cars, classes, series, and events. Our community includes all major purpose-built road racing classes, like the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and various pro series across North America and beyond. At ApexSpeed, we're passionate about amateur motorsports and are dedicated to helping our community have fun and grow while creating lasting memories on and off the track.
