For Sale: 1980 Van Diemen RF80 Formula Ford 1600 – $21,000 OBO (Full Package)
Posting on behalf of by husband, Warren Kawash, the race car needs to be sold ASAP due to lack of storage and health reasons.
Eligible for SCCA Club Ford and Vintage Racing
This Van Diemen RF80 has been comprehensively restored from the ground up after being purchased as a complete basket case. Every component has been carefully inspected, replaced, or rebuilt with reliability and performance in mind. It has been loved and cared for by a family deeply involved in the local Formula Ford community, and we're now looking to pass it on to another family who will love it just as much—and win with it.
Chassis & Suspension
Chassis stripped to bare, repaired where needed, cleaned, and repainted
New belly pan installed using new rivets and epoxy
Every nut and bolt replaced with Grade 8 or better; AN hardware used where appropriate (e.g., CV joints)
All spherical bearings replaced with Aurora units
All control arms, trailing links, sway bar links, steering links, clevises, and bearings replaced
New rear uprights and axles
Crack-checked and cleaned hubs and front uprights
Spax adjustable shocks with Hyperco springs
New brake calipers, rotors, and all hydraulic lines (brakes and clutch—hard and flexible)
New master cylinders and slave cylinder
Gearbox
Gearbox rebuilt with a new Rhino case and new bearings where needed (original case was cracked/corroded)
Comes with six complete gear sets
Engine
Engine built by MWE and has proven to be a strong regional motor
During active years, rebuilt annually with new bearings, rings, gaskets; all internal parts crack-checked and replaced as needed
C&R aluminum radiator with all new silicone hoses (plus a spare aluminum radiator with minor pinhole leaks, repairable)
New 13-row oil cooler
Entirely new exhaust system
Body & Spares
All bodywork replaced
Most new and spare parts sourced from Universal Racing (England)
Includes spare suspension parts (trailing links, upright assemblies)
4+ full sets of wheels
Spare nose (repairable from light off-track excursion)
Spare engine (currently disassembled):
Bottom end professionally prepped by Precision Balancing (Hudson, NH)
Needs head, carb, and intake prepped for use

Race History
Only 6 SCCA events run, driven by my father in law (Bob Kawash) or Mike Rand
Very competitive in SCCA Club Ford
Last event: Lime Rock Historic Festival, Labor Day 2015

Maintenance & Storage
Thorough preparation before every race weekend:
Full fluid changes
Leak inspection and full nut/bolt checks before and between sessions
Post-race: full cleaning, de-greasing, and inspection
Hasn’t been run since 2015 but stored with care in a garage
What It Needs
To get back on track, the following should be addressed:
New seat belts (current ones have aged out)
Fire bottle may need replacement
New brake pads, fresh fluids, and a battery
This is a well-prepared, fast, and reliable car that just needs a little attention to be race-ready again.
