    Default FIA vs Snell expiration

I’m moving to open wheel this year and I’m in the market for a new helmet. The Snell expiration is easy and makes sense, but there seems to be no info on expiration dates for FIA 8860-2018 and the new 8859-2024.

How does FRP and SCCA treat these FIA helmets?

I’m interested in getting the 8859-2024 helmet for the added ABP, especially if it’s good for a long time.

From GCR 9.3.19.C.2. (whew!) Emphasis added.

Crash helmets approved by the Snell Foundation with Snell sticker 2015 or later Special Application
SA2015/SAH2015, or by the SFI with a SFI Sticker SFI 31.1/2015 or newer, or by the FIA
standard 8859-2015 or FIA 8860-2010 or newer.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I know they’re accepted, but how do they “life” the FIA helmets that currently have no expiry?

I believe that SCCA follows the FIA on when FIA certs expire. Considering that FIA 8860-2010 is valid until Dec. 31, 2028, and 8859-2015 does not have an expiration date (yet), I would expect 8859-2024 ABP to be valid a very long time, likely 15 years or so.

    Default FIA vs. Snell certification

FIA-certified helmets are certified with rolling certification dates, presumably roughly the date of manufacture; certification extends for 10 years from that date. Snell-certified helmets are certified at discrete 5 year intervals (2015, 2020, 2025, etc.), with certification officially extending for 10 years after that date. Snell certification is not recognized at FIA-regulated international events.
