Default 2014 Elan DP02, $65k, just gone through

Sold! Hope the new owner enjoys the car!

2014 Elan DP02 IMSA Lites prototype. Roughly an LMP3 class recent historic race car. Running in NASA, VARA eligible, SCCA P1 eligible and chassis is capable of winning with body and engine upgrades. Mazda MZR (or Duratec) motor, Hewland FTR 6 speed transaxle with paddle shifting to improve performance and life. MoTeC C125 dash with I/O, datalogging, GPS, and pro analysis licenses. Car has been gone over, rebuilt transaxle, troubleshooting on motor, replaced leaking fuel cell, bodywork gone over and repaired as needed, new wrap, fire system recharged, new belts, and many minor components rebuilt or replaced as needed. Full records of going over the car are provided. Receipts over last two years total over $40k of work. The car is in quite good shape. Work done by Ian Lacy Racing in Tooele, Utah. 13 hours on Elan Power Products engine, 7 hours on gearbox since last rebuild. Three sets of wheels and limited spares included.

No known remaining mechanical issues. Needs fresh tires, what else is new. Recently identified wiring/sensor issues (related to the MoTeC upgrade parts): dash/data recording data not valid for (1) front brake pressure, (2) oil temp, and (3) one of the rear shock pot sensors. Regarding (2), the oil pressure and water temperature sensors work, and the car is always warmed up properly.

The Multimatic dynamic shocks are simply excellent. The car shares some parts with the Pro Formula Mazdas, and that makes it easier to get tires and spares, and it can be run at a fairly low cost if the motor is intentionally rebuilt conservatively (Elan can rebuild it at this power level with 100 hour rebuild intervals). For SCCA or just overkill, the motor can instead be rebuilt at 2.3 or 2.5L or replaced with Duratec builds with outputs just over 300bhp, and Zebulon offers a (~$50k) full carbon DP02 body with updated aero to replace the current fiberglass body, adding downforce and reducing weight and drag. Also, very safe - the car meets FIA F3 safety standards including rollover and side anti-intrusion. This is an excellent race car.

I have a fair bit of notes and collected info about the car that I can append here or simply provide to the buyer. Ian Lacy Racing can talk about the car with you, and they talked with Kevin at Comprent on occasion and had him assist in a few things such as rebuilding the steering.

For sale because we’ve made a big shift and decided to move our family to Oahu Hawaii instead of building a home here. They don’t have any racetracks on the island, and I don't want to own a car to do fly in and out arrive and drive racing. I also have a one, five, and eight year old, and I want to spend more of my time/energy/money with them while they are young. At least surfing will be cheaper than auto racing!

Thanks Bill. I have a few interested parties right now, but if no one comes through, I'll probably do that.

And honestly, if I have some fun and run it once or twice this year, then sell it a year from now, that's fine too.

Still available. I continue to get messages, some pretty serious, but no one has quite pulled the trigger.

This is a solid example of a great platform!

Default IT WAS A NON Refundable Deposit after all.

    ace37

Sale fell through, the likely buyer’s spouse had a different idea, car is back up for sale! I’ll send a PM to the two people that reached out while it was pending.

I am surprised that the seller would make a public comment about my wife having a different idea about the car purchase when he is completely unaware of my personal situation.
I had an accident in 2015 that injured my cervical spine, which was related to my flights in a high G environment in the F16.
after 8 years of rehad and hard work I have improved my health status and had the desire to return to racing before I simply got too old to race.
The seller and I had great conversations about the car and what it had to offer but I had no reason to mention my disabilities or health struggles and that this was a way to close out unfinished business.
The Lady would push me through the tough times certainly has the right to have a say in a car purchase especially when she envisions wheel to wheel racing as a way to sustain
Another cervical injury. After careful thought, I sadly agreed with her and withdrew my option to buy the car which I had placed a refundable deposit on 7 April 2025.
On 7 MY 2025 I contacted the seller telling him that I would had decided against buying the car and that I while I hated to not purchase the car, I had to support my wife's concerns.
My wife manages or finances after my accident in 2015, and she felt justified in asking for the $500 deposit she felt was refundable.
Much to my surprise John Taylor the CEO of a tech company in Farmington , UT wrote an offensive letter to my wife about how she had stopped the sale and wasted his time. Neither of us like to
Mention my disabilities or use them as a reason for any decision so she never felt that the request for the deposit was out of line. I really felt the Mr Taylor was a stand up guy until he attacked my wife in a email, in a way that is frankly unforgivable.

If I had know he would be rude and offensive to the person that has saved my life over the last 8 years I would never let her know his email but I think if Mr Taylor has the audacity to mention my wife in his sales ad,
Then the racing community should know who they are dealing with and ensure that the purchase of the DP02 is done with a sales contract and everything in writing. The seller does not understand the value of a handshake.

I am truly sad about the missed opportunity at owning a DP02 but my wife and my relationship are far more important than any race car, airplane or boat in existence. Dealing with the seller makes me realize that I need to close this chapter before it begins because
Life is too short to deal with nasty low integrity humans. John Taylor was able to sell the car with in 24-48 of me declining the purchase so I don't understand his harsh remarks to my wife. If anything he cut down the time to sale by weeks once I dropped out. Congrats to the new buyer. I hope your $25,000 deposit is in a written contract in the event you can't follow through. Truly pathetic interaction LtCol John D. Hermann USAF Retired

John, this is completely inappropriate. You could respond to my email or call, but you instead emailed saying not to contact you. Fine if that’s it, but then you do this? Try at least a tiny bit to discuss or work things out before attacking someone in public. You’re acting cowardly.

This is none of my business… but since it’s posted here the bold above is obviously what made the buyer’s reply public.

I’ve been with my wife nearly 47 years, and have been her caregiver for 20+. All I’ll say is if anyone called either of us out online with the provocative and unnecessary quote I bolded, my reply would likely go further than what you received. You might instead feel lucky to be in your shoes, presuming you haven’t spent eight years in recovery like the buyer.

It looks pretty shabby to now demand a public apology — as the only option get a deposit back.

This injured vet is surely disappointed he can’t go racing. Your efforts to make that worse set a pretty low bar.

Hello stranger. We see things quite differently then. Maybe it’s generational.

The bolded text was anonymous. John was intentionally never identified until he chose to identify himself with the public reply above. He did this without discussing anything with me beforehand. And I responded to the rude post here by giving him what he didn’t give me. I replied to him privately and gave him some time to respond.

He didn’t respond. So now I addressed his one sided public claims with the relevant facts.

I didn’t ask for a public apology. He has my contact info. And why would $500 matter to a person who can run a P1 car anyway? This is all about the principle. Treat people with respect, all around.

    More baiting provocation, I see…

If it’s indeed generational, well, I’m 65… and I took the bait, since it was again so clearly baiting.

If $500 is no big deal, then you could have refunded it way before all this. Right?

The last seller that pulled stuff not unlike this — to us — got banned, hence my commenting. Folks don’t generally use this place to irritate buyers, Thankfully.

I genuinely didn’t think that was offensive. In either case. I meant that genuinely, and if you felt was baiting you, I apologize for that. My spouse and I are both working millennial professionals so perhaps we are not in touch. Because our life experience is not the same. And that should be ok.

And John, if mentioning your wife initially irritated you, which with this context makes it appear that was the case, then I did not realize that would touch a nerve. It was unintended, and for that I apologize. My spouse and I would not have been offended, and I didn’t understand that you and your spouse would be.

It’s probably too late to matter but I’ll be glad to remove that from the post. Honestly communication is all I was hoping for, before anything was posted. This should have been easy to talk through privately. If we talk through it I’ll be glad to remove all of this. And of course a moderator could make the decision for me, that’s not in my hands.

Been thinking on this point and how my comments appeared to you to be baiting… thanks for more perspective.

I’ve sent John the deposit back. I still don’t feel like they treated me well at the end and I was offended by it, but perhaps I upset John without meaning to. And while I wanted to make a point, I have no interest in pouring salt in a wound.

In an early relationship in life a partner told me it was important to look at a given situation from every angle available .

While i know nothing of what took place here the flip side is the perspective buyer likely should have had this conversation with his wife prior to even looking at racecars and making offers

    Just a thought
    Cheers
