Like many others here, I've appreciated Dave's contributions to this community for many years. Great guy.
Interestingly, Jim Downing is racing at Road Atlanta this weekend. I think he's 80, too.
Great inspiration for us all.

Also heard Jack Walbran in F5 at the ARRC this weekend is 83.
I *wish* there was a good substitution for racing, but I haven't come up with anything close (and affordable).
and then there's the guy who keeps posting something about how salty heroin is akin to racing or something like that.......any of y'all ever won any salt? Me neither.
Guess that's why we all keep coming back
Witnessed at my first Runoffs at age 12, Dave and Sherrie Weitzenhof won a National Championship in Formula Vee.
Today is the 50th anniversary of that first of seven wins. FIFTY YEARS.
Never underestimate the power of heroes, and at times like this, a lifetime of inspiration they give the rest of us.

E1,
Nice post. I'd have "liked" it, but I have a hard time visualizing myself as any sort of hero. Real heroes are people (first responders, soldiers, etc.) that do things that are dangerous and life-threatening, but they keep on doing those things anyway out of a sense of duty. They may love what they're doing, but putting their lives on the line is what defines a hero to me. Others may react to a sudden life threatening situation by doing something that saves lives or injuries and that is also heroic.
Racing cars and giving opinions and advice does not, IMO, make me a hero.
