    Default Ultrasonic Cleaning

    Howdy,

I have a rather expensive oil cooler I would like to keep as a spare. Prior owner had a motor where the nut backed off the clutch and shed shavings into the oil. (GSXR 1000 engine).

Anyone have a source to properly clean a large oil cooler? (Estimate 12x12).

    Thanks in advance!

Just MHO, but before sending it out for professional cleaning, run your parts washer stream through it for a few hours to get a lot of the crud out. Can't hurt.

I was considering having some bits cleaned to save me a whole lot of time and elbow grease. The place is semi-local to me, so Iooked them up and found this:

Just adding to my previous post, I had a setrab oil/water heat exchanger go through a blow up. Contacted pacific OCS and their price was very expensive. It was cheaper to just buy another cooler. That said, the setrab is no longer available, so I just ran my parts cleaner through it for hours and hours while I was doing the engine rebuild, with the outlet dumping into a pie pan to catch what shrapnel there was inside. Had to go on a leap of faith that it was cleaned out sufficiently when the shrapnel output went to near zero!

I would recommend flowing hot soapy water (dishwasher soap) through it as well. Unlike solvent or brake cleaner, detergent has surfactant molecules that will break the "bond tension" that exists between the metal debris and the oil cooler walls. The faster you can flow the hot soapy water through the oil cooler, the better. Reverse the soapy water flow direction a few times as well.
