    Default FRP Road Atlanta

    Guys,

I understood the traditional April FRP event at Road Atlanta was moved from April to October. However , the FRP website only shows a 2 day event.....no test day, is this correct ?

The SCCA Major in March is also a 2 day event with no test day.......what’s up at Road Atlanta ?

I got the following email response from the track this morning:

    Good morning,
There will not be a test day before the March SCCA event this year.
I don’t see one on the schedule for the spring but our updated schedule should be on the website within a few weeks.
    I apologize for any inconvenience.

Clearly, Road Atlanta was not concerned about the negative effects to the Atlanta Region event entries, or the club racing community, when they replaced their traditional test day with a rental day for another customer. I doubt it will make a lot of difference to the locals, but those travelling good distance for their first event of their season, as many have, will likely reconsider their commitment. I expect those travelers are a critical factor on the bottom line to the race organizers. This may go back to the people who reduced it from a 4-day event (1+3) only a few years ago. We keep hearing that there are people waiting in line to take over SCCA dates when they/we give them up. That appears to be the case here.

Agreed. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me to tow 500 miles one way for a two day event. My guess is that they think they have enough Spec Miatas and SRFs with short tows that they don't really care about the other entries.

I hope this encourages more FRP entries!

I think the point is that the event in the past has attracted many long distance entries since the northern US and Canada is not racing in March and it's a good tune-up for the season at a great track.......opportunity lost.

I don't think the FRP entries will be significantly affected by a two day event.

Bob may comment more, but the Series has made an effort to shorten events, and reduce costs, at the request of competitors. That event will be 1 1/2-2 day travel each way for many competitors, so it is already 4-5 days. And I think many of us are more eager for test days early in the season than at the end. Complaints about a lack of quality track time at FRP events are rare.
    You should check one out.

I expect that the Atlanta Region folks are about as thrilled with this development as FRP was when their event was moved.

    Hey Greg,
I know FRP runs a quality event, but the OCT event will be my first at Road Atlanta in many years, so the test day was really needed by me.......thanks for your thoughts, and my car lives in Indy....
    regards,
    Bill

Default FRP April 21-22 Road Atlanta date

April 21-22 is back on the Schedule! After a lot of negotiation, FRP and Road Atlanta management have come to an agreement to reinstate the April weekend.
