We saw the model and frame at the PRI show in December.
Have you had a look at http://nasaprototype.com
Click on the forum and there's a build thread.
I think there was a thread on this car some time ago. If memory serves it was considered to look neat but with the Mazda motor too little power. Would it be as fast as a P2?.....I wonder.

The minimum weight for a P2 with the 2.0 MZR engine is 1300 lbs. This car is spec'ed to weigh 1550, so I doubt it will be that competitive in P2. Except for the wheels (which will be hard to change as the brakes are too large for 13" wheels) and rear wing endplates, I believe it could be legal for P2.
They run a sealed MZR with a claimed 185 hp. That's probably 10% down to what you can do in P2 with the MZR.
I've seen the first car nearing completion and it's pretty nice actually, and a high spec for the price. I know they are trying to keep weight down and it is a spec class so I guess that's not super critical.
What is the predicted cost for one of these cars? Is that known?

$64k in kit form.....

Here's a guy with his own website. Not much but...

Looks like half of the 14 on order are in California/Nevada.....
It's uglier, slower, and more expensive than a ESR.
I don't see the point.
I think it looks pretty good!

That actually looks pretty darn good from that view

This is a good looking car. It will be interesting to see how this spec class develops. I understand that the first lot of cars have been purchased by people in the California, Nevada area. Does anyone know where the cars owners run? It would be nice to go by the track when the NP-01's are there and see them run and talk to the owners about them.
7 of the 14 initial orders are headed west. I am in Kansas City and have one coming, and expect a couple more in the region sometime next season.
The build process has been quite public on nasaforums and Elan's facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/ElanMotorsports
There are track videos up of the first test. It is really a lot for the money when you look at the complete package.
Car has tested at Roebling and Kershaw. In both cases car was a couple seconds a lap faster than a FF1600 car and a couple seconds slower than a FF2000 car.
So faster than had been expected initially. It is a pretty decent deal.
Pretty tidy run, nice...
Brand new car and they forget to put in head surround/bolsters/containment. Bummer
Please understand that this car is very cost contained/limited. As hard as it may seem to believe-at the sales price of the car Elan is not making much money on this project.
A lot of difficult decisions have to be made in order to get the car costs to where they are on this car. And that price point was set with NASA input.
Adding bits like head restraints, side bolsters, etc would drive price point way above what was decided upon.
It is easy to say-"car should have this or that" - until you have to pay for it.
I get that it's budget limited, but that's a pretty lame place to save some cash. They went with fancy suspension, engine and transmission components and left off common safety components. I like the car a lot, but that strikes me as poor prioritization.

Could you realistically expect a sanctioning body to prohibit or penalize you for ADDING safety equipment after the fact?
Hell, for that matter, they could offer those things as options that you could add if you wanted them.
Yes, I get that "all modern competitors have them!". But odds are, those competitors don't match the price point that the NP01 does.
(I have no dog in this fight, just stating what seemed obvious to me).
"It's uglier, slower, and more expensive than a ESR"
Are all ESR ulgy?
Nasa will not disqualify you for adding a headrestraint, etc. Add it if you want.
Originally the car was going to be delivered with seat or seatbelts. Logic being that these are items that drivers often times replace with what they find most effective/comfortable for them.
Elan has a list of options-yet to be released. That stuff, airjacks, Q/R fuel system, lights, etc are part of that list.
As far as "fancy" engine-umm-it is a stock MZR, the gearbox is cheaper than a Hewland style manual gearbox--so no money wasted there--and the suspension is nothing special. Cost on that stuff is pretty standardized. Not really any room there to cut costs. They are at a bare minimum.
So all three areas mentioned as areas where Elan "went over the top" is just 100% wrong .
And whereas a driver/owner can add seats, belts, restraints, etc after the fact they cannot so easily (or allowed to by NASA rules) swap out the engine, gearbox, susp bits for other bits.
When you have to design and mfg a spec car and meet a large number of conflicting demands then your points would carry more weight. Right now they are just complaints driven by ignorance of all of the information/history of what went into in getting car out. Not your fault--you were not there in any of the long discussions as to how to content the car-what to include and what to leave out.
What is an ESR? Seriously. Not familiar with that spec.
A SCCA FE car with a sports racer body
Ahh-Yes-An SCCA Enterprise Car. I knew that. Just had a brain fade.
See no issues with that car. Not bad looking at all. Just not available for NASA-as it is an SCCA Enterprises car. And NASA wanted a new car.
So both cars fill similiar roles.
May be F4 is the way to go ,safe ,modern and less expensive.
Looks better too.
two cents.

Perhaps the car should come with fire suit and helmet for the driver then!?
Their website clearly crows about their custom Elan manifold, the fact that it makes about 35hp more than a stock MZR, that they took cost savings from somewhere (body maybe?) and went with a higher end MCS damper setup and I believe it has the 6speed sequential Sadev. All that's cool. If I had the cash I'd probably buy one. But to not include pretty basic safety equpment?![]()

I was being facetious.
I think the car is cool as hell and I ordered one. Should have it in December.![]()

Im cool with spec. I like the FE, There just are not enough on the west coast.
Hi Stan, Im going to just run the NASA stuff with it. It would get its butt kicked in P2. Plus I don't think SCCA would be to happy if you bring NASA's new car to a SCCA race.....
