I'm trying to get enough parts together to build another Mk9, can these layshafts (without the gear) be used as a layshaft in a standard 4-speed Mk9 transmission? I never have figured out what the differences are in a Staff and Hewland.. If they are the same physical size, are they 1" splines or the larger Mk5 diameter?

    (edit)
I just saw the 'female spline' part of the description - I guess that is one difference!

Anyone have a decent Mk9 layshaft they could part with?

    Post Gear box differences

Two different manufactures that make these similear transmission / transaxle gear boxes, but they have differeces here & there in the design. All are available as 4 speed or 5 speed transaxle.

The Hewland MK-5 & The Staffs have a 1 & 1/8 inch shafts for pinion shaft & lay shaft. Both are a more expensive gear box than the MK-9. Designed for more power & greater reliability. However, There are a few FF's that use the staffs Four speed transmission, such as the Swift DB-6. But because Staffs are more expensive the majority of the FF's use the cheaper Hewland MK-9

The Staffs & MK-5 gear boxes both use the same MK-5 gears for the top gears, except for first gear, which is slightly different due to the design differences in the splines that enguage the clutch shaft -- Staffs has Female Splines in the Layshaft end & uses no coupler sleeve. The MK-5 uses the coupler sleeve & is a male spline on end of shaft.

The Staffs all use the same MK-5 second gear, but it must be machined from 1.500 inches down to 1.460 inches to fit. So same part , but requires customization to fit.

These two gear boxes are very strong & can take a lot more abuse plus have higher power & torque ratings. Both are rated to 240 HP, so are often used in the higher power cars. The MK-5 gears are much bigger than MK-9 gears, & use a tougher steel & are a much heavier duty gear for Endurance Racing, Formula Atlantic cars, Sports Racers, or where ever you need more reliability, etc..

The steel alloy used is an aircraft grade 2VAR --(Double Vacuum Remelt) 9310 alloy & the gear components are fully Hobbed, Shaved, & Shotpeened. This is important when running longer endurance races or in cars with more power to get maxium reliability for the long endurance races that are over 3 hours long.

Some Staffs gear boxes also run an oil pump & oil filter & even an oil cooler -- again for maximium reliability for more than the 30 minute session most club racers run.

When you open your MK-9 for a gear change you will see little spects of steel floating around, & on the magnetic drain & fill plugs. Of course you change your oil whth the gear change & most is gotten out. But if left in it will damage internal componentsd. In the Staffs box, if equiped with the oiptional filter, this is filtered out in the staffs boxes if you have that option for longer transaxle life - used in endurance cars a lot. So they are a much better & more robust transaxles compaired to the MK-9 in your FF.

The MK-9 hewland has a smaller shaft for the lay shaft & pinion shaft - plus smaller gears & is rated for intermintint 160 HP max. The MK-9 is lighter & cost less. So perfect for FF & S-2000, but not strong enough for A, B, & C Sports Racers & FA cars, etc.. The MK-9 gears are smaller & can not handle big torque inputs.

So different gear boxes for different applications & of course the price differences.

The gears I am selling would be perfect for a vintage FA car or Sports Racer or such that has the 4 speed version of the Staffs transaxle instead of the newer 5 speed version of the same gear box that the Current FA cars use.

I hope I have answered your question.

thanks for the explanation, that clears up a lot. I have seen references of a dedicated 4-speed Staffs that use the smaller Mk9 gears and wasn't sure what, if any, other parts are common to my Mk9
