Fremont, California/Green Bay, Wisconsin ? (Jan 29, 2012) - The US Formula 1000 Championship has announced its point structure for 2013. The point structure is planned to be similar to the points payout used in the SCCA Majors Races with drivers earning points based on finishing positions from 1st down to 20th place. The US Formula 1000 Championship will differ from the SCCA Majors in two ways: It will also award two additional points for each pole position, and the September season finale at Road America will be worth double points.
The US Formula 1000 East and West Championships will each consist of five double race events (10 total) with an additional race added to determine the overall US Formula 1000 Championship. Drivers competing for either the US Formula 1000 East Championship or the US Formula 1000 West Championship will count their best 8 results from their series 10 races to determine the East or West driver's champion.
For the nationwide US Formula 1000 Championship, drivers will count their best 8 results from their respective championships, then add the double points for their finish in the Championship race (Race 11) to determine their total season points to decide the overall US Formula 1000 Driver's Champion. In the event of a points tie the champion will be determined by the driver with the maximum number of wins, then most second place finishes, most third place finishes, 4th, 5th, etc. until a champion is determined. The driver winning the overall US Formula 1000 championship must attend and take the green flag in the championship race (Race 11).
