I don't know if it's just me: but I tried three days to register online & it kept saying my card was declined even though I had plenty of balance to spare AND used the card elsewhere fine. Finally I just gave up and sent a check.

I hope the hell more Formula Mazdas show up, otherwise it's going to be me, my customer, and Stuart.

Hmmm - I think you're right. It does say 'turn a wheel' during a Majors event - so .. if you TURN A WHEEL in any session for the weekend - despite that all weekends are doubles, it would appear that you qualify for 1 of the 3 required.

I wonder if they intended it that way. Probably so ....
Anyone on the CRB care to comment ??

So all you have to do is turn up at three Majors, turn one lap of qualifying at each one and go home and you are off to the Run-Offs?
For the cost of three entries and towing to and from, you can go to the Run-Offs?
I wonder if anyone will try this?
Think of the saving on tires and engines etc!

Can past champions run more than 1 class without racing and qualifying thru nationals/majors? Could i not race all year and save my money and just run three classes at the runoffs?

    Franklin,

My understanding is that if you ever won the Runoffs in a class, you have an automatic invite to this year's Runoffs in that class as long as you hold a national license. You do not have to enter any races in 2013 to qualify.

If you won in three different classes, you have invites in all those three classes.

Interesting that Mike Rand won FB in 1970... it was a different FB back then... so what class does he get an invite in?

From the press release now up on SCCA.com (bold added for emphasis):

"Through the U.S. Majors Tour, any driver participating in three different Majors events in the same class (turning a wheel in an official session) will earn an invitation in that class. This criteria was used in 2012 for the Majors pilot program in what has become the Mid-States Conference.

A special invitation will be extended to any past SCCA National Champion to return to the 50th running of the Runoffs, provided that they qualify for a National license. Any past Runoffs National Champion may enter one class at the 2013 Runoffs without meeting the participation or performance criteria."

    What that means:

. If you sign up for three Majors weekends (regardless of conference) and participate in at least one session (which means you don't qualify for a refund), you've earned an invitation to the Runoffs. That said, actually racing sometime during the year certainly increases your chances of doing well at the Runoffs.

. The BoD discussed this a lot and it ended up past champions get one invitation regardless of how many championships they won. You get into a grey area with somebody like Mike Lewis who's the defending GT-1 champion (thus earning an invitation) plus a multi-time National champ (in both GT-3 and GT-1), but those situations will be dealt with as they surface by the CRB. There's also some concern that a car owner might hire Bobby Rahal (or Michael Andretti, or Roger Penske) to come in as a ringer and clean up, but do you really think any of those guys (a) are interested in doing that and/or (b) will be competitive without having driven in anger in a number of years?

And the reason a past champion can enter any class is pointed out by the Frog's question - some classes (GT-4, GT-5, HSR, GP, SSA, SSGT, etc.) no longer exist so requiring someone to compete in the same class as their championship is not feasible.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program...

someone hiring Mike andretti would be awful dissappointed when they had the entry refused as despite popular opinion Mikey never won the runoffs. 3rd was all he had.

Maybe Wren was inquiring for a ride to put Brandon into.

Rand was thinking about his Fit powered Crossle.
