Just in time to renew a winter discussion about forward facing gaps.
I dont see any forward facing gaps ... no holes that allow air to pass thru except the air that cools to radiators ..

if there was a barge board or a support from inlet to floor .. then there is an opening since there is neither ... then I would argue against it being illegal ... radon firman are legal right ? as they are now ..

As to the forward facing gaps - we are now all illegal, so I guess all winged open wheel classes can just pack it in and go find their own pro series to run in - Yay!
For the record, i didn't see any gaps.
Also for the record. I believe in 6 years of F2kCS racing, VDs have won every event. I think this kind of "modernization" will only positively extend their life span.
here's hoping !! that was the intent ... moderization of a already good car ..![]()

Thanks Juan ! there is no real NAME I don't think ... but it kind of takes a number of disciplines and melds them all together .. take the best stab at a shape with the CAD ... make sections every 2-4 inches ... then make a drawing of those sections print them out 1:1 scale .. make wood or MDF 1/4 thick of those cross sections and FIT them to the rest the body work then space them at 2-4" what ever is appropriate THEN throw out the CAD model shape and adjust on the fly !
Make both sides the SAME .. then cut foam to insert and glue together ... let simmer for a few days .. or hours which ever your patience will allow (mine was a couple hours) THEN break out the saws all and start shaping ... THEN make a MOUNTAIN or 2 of DUST and presto! if you were a good boy and wore your respirator ... then you are ready for the next step But if you were NOT and are paying for your stupidity ... then you are SICK from all the inhaled dust ... I'm taking a break to get well again and find my respirator for the next step ... the plastic filler stage.
I'm not sure what you call it but that is it in a nutshell
Oh one more thing ... get your local (Dauntless Engineering) to cut you the first 4 inches on their 3D router a huge help ! Stan Clayton was excellent at this and very reasonable I might add !! Thanks Stan and Rennie HUGE help !

Inspired by the Radon?
[FONT=Verdana]Actually not as much as the RB6 .. I was really thinking of doing this 2+ year ago had some CAD models done way back then ... I kind of gave up the idea after thinking how much work it was ! .... Once I got hooked up with Gary Hickman and saw some of my models turned into real parts .... I changed my mind about whether it could be done or not. Sure the Radon was a bit of encouragement as well ....... Nathan and the whole crew that produced that master piece did a OUTSTANDING job !! [FONT=Verdana]I really like some of the design aspects of the Radon Nice car! But a lot of this was all models up before we ever saw any pictures of the Radon. I've wanted to build a car for close to 10 years. just never had all the pieces together to be able to make it happen at once before. Case in point the Shim based push rod were a project that was started (modeled in CAD in 2009) not until 2011 did the parts get made … although the parts got STARTED in AUG of 2010 .. didn’t get finished till FEB 2011 Gary Hickman really helped make this a reality !! the machinist I was using before him was just not able to move fast enough to make it happen .. NICE guy !! supper nice work but just couldn’t make it happen quick enough to finish .. When I was introduced to Gary Hickman, WOW! GREAT GUY ! very responsive and EXCELLENT work and could make it happen ! [/FONT]

And if you have a chance, let us know what radiator or cooling arrangement you expect to work the best.

This CAR is an early Rf98 .. has late model side panels .. so it could be done, I don’t think THAT part is any different .. the main difference is in the engine cover .. but even then not a huge deal.[/FONT]

Really nice job. Can you recommend a tool for shaping the foam after the rough cut is done. I need to shape and smooth out a bead seat prior to having it covered.

[FONT=Verdana]Not the OEM coolers they will be different and not the same right and left. slight chance that the OEM could be MADE to work .. but that is not the primary goal and not the path we are taking now. the packaging is substantially better I think .. everything is easily accessible and cleaner ! when we are done we'll post pix .. soon [/FONT]

I used a number of tools. really liked the saws-all fopr the big cuts and a long board sander was used to shape the big curves the small stuff was done with a drill and a drum sander 2" diameter then to finish it off I had a foam pad that had been wrapped in like #80 grit paper ... comes all moulded together and they are CHEAP !! that works very well to do a lot of the medium to small shapiing/blending ..beyond that lots of ELBOW !
