Default 88 VD Air filter (What fits)???

Ed's car needs an air filter. It's an 88 VD with Kent motor. I have made a duct from the bottom side of the air scoop down to the carb. The duct is integrated into the side of the engine cover all fiberglass.

I would like to put a cone filter in the removeable upper air scoop I think this will work. http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pro...asp?RecID=1222

Unless someone else has hit an easy button that I haven't tripped over yet.

I was also thinking of making a flat foam filter with wire mesh support under it that fit the scoop bottom in a rounded triangle shape.

Hi Joe. I obviously have the same question. ( same model)
A few days ago, I tried to measure out and imagine the tapered model. But if the top is only 5/8" (1.25/2) in from the bottom, I don't see it clearing the bodywork 3.5" up from the carb base.

Maybe we can find this car's owner.

Another idea - maybe it's what you have. I have a square-ish base plate.

I'm about 1 day from deciding to cut into the right side of the engine cover bodywork to use the regular K&N that I bought months ago. It would be approx. a 3x3" hole.

Or... we ask everyone in this thread...

In case you haven't looked the K&N website has a LOT of choices but I think they all assume a round mounting flange.

I think I posted previously that I found a race car duct that would fit in the opening behind my head on my 85 and then found a K&N that would fit the duct and was slightly angled to fit inside the tail. You guys might be able to do something similar. In my case air enters the inside of the filter.

The attached picture is taken from the part of the integral "airbox" in the tail where it mates with the plate and thick foam gasket on top of the carb.

    Default Van Diemen air filter

I used a PiperCross air filter from Truechoice on my 88 VD back when I owned one. The filter kit came with a Webber mounting flange. The top of the filter deformed slightly in the corner near the engine cover. I had to cut away a fiberglass bulkhead in front of the carb for air flow as my engine cover of unknown vintage had a bulkhead there. It was ok for club racing. Much better solution is to design and fabricate a new side inlet duct for fresh air.

Nothing fits. The stock setup was a duct in the bodywork sealed to the carb with a filter element covering the forward facing hole behind the drivers head. None of the bodywork fits right anymore and the idea of leaving the carb uncovered whenever you take the bodywork off is anathema, so everyone tries something different. Nothing fits, you have to bodge something and it doesn't work great until you cut the bodywork up and create some space.

Sorry, but that is VD for you...

Dick, that is a classic picture of tape covering the carb.

I did something similair withthe pieces of 1/2 pipe I used to center the rack during alignment. Big red duct tape tags that say remove before flight.

I am down to the final stages of air inlet ducting. Decided to use the foam filter media from pegasus. I am going to support it with the 1/4" wire mesh screen and clamp it to the inside bottom opening of the scoop.

I think it is going to work really well. If not it will be a total failure.

I made a hole to fit a regular K&N. It's not the the prettiest. PIC =http://flic.kr/p/a2cwuj

I've seen much less "photogenic" solutions.

I recommend replacing the wing nuts with nylocks . . . even for autocross. I think wing nuts tend to "take off" just sitting . . .

Is a future project a scope of some sort?
