FRP is starting later in the month at Road Atlanta, and the list of competitors begins to fall into place. The entries for the FF1600 field approaches the 20s.
This year, it looks like a number of competitors have opted for the Piper DF5 Honda combination. This is quite unusual, as the last decade has seen a dominance by the teams who run the Mygale chassis. In the last couple of years, a resurgence of the Piper has put the car on the front of the grid.
I believe the Piper count will be in the 5-9 car range, depending on who shows up.
It looks like Eric Langbein will be heading a 3 car Piper outfit, as he makes his return to the FRP paddock! I know his cars will be upfront and fast!
Bob Perona has been lending his car to a young 14-year-old, and I hear he is quick! Let's see if they can make it to some FRP events this year. I know in the past, Bob's personal racing schedule is slim, he is normally busy coaching INDYCAR drivers, and others on the "Road to Indy".
Brian Graham Racing will join FRP later on in the year, as he has a very busy schedule. Juggling races in both Canada and the States. BGR will be a force to be reckoned with, and will probably shuffle the points up for those in the championship.
The master class is full, and boy, that is a long list of Spectrum built cars. The cockpit of the Spectrum is quite large, and it accommodates "grown" people well, making it a good choice for many.
The Ray Chassis is also here, and as more cars are sold, I'm sure we will see many on the grid!
If you look at the list of Drivers in INDYCAR and INDYNXT, many of them have some type of experience in Formula Ford 1600 racing. I personally believe with the right level of competition, FF is still a great training ground for those who want to climb the ladder, and of course one of the best places to become a better driver or maintain "race shape", for everyone!
I would like to thank FRP and all those involved for hosting these events. I know it takes much time, work, and planning. It is really a blessing that we have such a great group of people who are involved and spend their energy to give back to our beloved class!
