RF81 starter
Ben,
I have a starter from an '81 Van Diemen. I don't know if it will fit an '88, I'm not familiar with the '88. Photos attached.

its like a Swift DB1 but not the same. The starter is easy to source but the drive??? If the old drive is useable it should only be pinned on then source the starter or get it redone

I dont think that was the base starter.on an 88
Primus "used parts" had one pictured.
Piecing together what I'm reading it sounds like you need to 1) reuse as many of the current parts as you can and 2) search for swift style starters which were late 70s/early 80s Toyota Corolla starters. It can be hard to nail down the exact version and can be trial and error. You'll find more info on these if you search on apexspeed.
I had an 85 van diemen which was converted to swift style with a custom shaft. Mounts on the 3 unused engine mount holes middle of the block. If this sounds like what you have then hopefully you can switch your search to swift starters and adapter your shaft to the new starter. The shafts might be close, but the nose that is supported in the bellhousing bushing may be different from swift.

The Primus one is not an 88
This might be similar to what you need. Swift DB4 BDA.
You need the Swift-type starter that's based on a Denso/Toyota unit. Van Diemen used their own front casting to mount the starter on the side of the block.
If you have the extension shaft, that should be fine to reuse. It is possible to replace the gear on these if it's worn (be sure the replacement has the same number of teeth as the old one!)
Contact Universal Racing Services in the UK, they hold stock of Van Diemen parts.
After some investigation I found a starter for the 88 VD, thank you All for the tips
