    Default Car Paint Color

    Gents:

Short story here before I get to the question. I used to fly with an Aviator that was truly blessed: K-12 Parochial school, smart as heck, survived as an RVN Air Assault A/C Commander, and get this, his Grand Aunt is Saint Faustina, Chaplet of the Devine Mercy.

We both lived on the water in the Brainerd Lakes Recreational Area, and often discussed opening a descent but affordable restaurant. His reply always was, “You can’t account for people’s tastes”.

Having said that, I am at the point of paint. I have considered McLaren Orange.

Then, I have considered Porsche Silver and Porsche Orange.

    My question is:
    • paint the coachwork the way I like it (read: above);
    • paint it all white (Deanie’s recommendation)
    • leave it in blocked primer.

Paint it whatever color you like.

    And don't crash.

I like to buy colored gaffers tape, and get the paint the same color as the tape. Another thought, is get vinyl sign material (lots of colors), and get paint to match. Simple repairs at the track can be then finished with a simple application of tape or vinyl.

Thats why I've gravitated to Toyota Voo Doo blue, it matches 3M Smurf blue vinyl and Krylon rattle can sail blue... makes for easy repairs.

Unless you're selling it, seems like you'd paint it the way YOU like it. If you're selling it, the orange looks fine, but the new owner will likely use it as a basecoat for their preferred paint job.

I recently restored and sold two cars. The very first thing the new owner did was repaint them.

The idea was not to spend money on eye candy. Primer it is.

The aircraft service company I run paints aircraft and we occasionally get aircraft that are being 'flipped'. More often than not, we repaint them in Matterhorn White basecoat only, but the seller pays us for three more stripe colors. They tell prospective buyers "I've already paid for three stripe colors, you just need to select the colors and layout that you want."

You may want to double check the GCR - it used to say that cars could not have just primer for the paint.

Of course, you can primer it and then spray a coat of clear over it.Most primers will then be a satin finish.

In high dollar motorsport - flat colors are all the rage - who is to say flat gray is primer or just a flat color?

    Jim:

After more than a decade of restoration, the car will be for sale by winter. EVERYTHING is new, to include a dyno time only QS Pinto (long rod, proprietary piston, Elgin cam, QS fuel pump and Dizzy, Fast Forward dry sump oil pump, 5.5” Tilton clutch, minimum weight Ivey starting ring), Gear Daddies LD200, aero, rads, yada yada, yada.

The chassis was inspected and refined by Pat Prince, front and rear cockpit adjustable ARBs, LifeLine electric fire suppression, Stack ST8100……..

Last week, I took out a third mortgage in efforts to keep this project alive. So, economy of resources is essential. I am inclined to do the coach work in block sanded primer. After all, “you can’t account for people’s tastes”.

As I am selling the car, my thought was let the new owner choose the color scheme, and I could economize.

I was inaccurate in my initial post, I should have stated the above. My bad.

Recently I sold three houses. Put one one FaceBook market place with no upgrades by me except to put a new sump pumpin the basement so we could get rid of the water in the basement. Sold in 6 hours of being on Facebook
Second house, 1960's brick ranch, had it completely repainted inside and $20,000 of landscaping upgrades. On the market over a year on a private lake. Sold it for three tousand dollars less than the first offer we turned down, the first week it was on the market.
Third house, new paint, new carpet. Sold second day on the market for $5,000 over asking price.
My advice is figure out what the market value of the car is, and how much do yuou want to make or loose on the sale. Use the paint job as a bargining chip.

Huh. First thing I did with any new car was buy rolls of the appropriate color tape.

I sold a March 722 in 1995 which was freshly painted in yellow. After one race, the new owner painted it another color.

    Default I read somewhere...

that GREEN was the fastest colour.

Perhaps that was a reference to money.

...and I think it's often not only the first but even more it's the ONLY thing new owners can actually manage to do properly on their cars... always makes me giggle.

@Rick - maybe a quick vinyl job would be ideal?

There is a body repair and paint TC in Panama City Beach. My understanding is, bring in the coachwork, pay for the materials, and they do their learning magic. Thoughts?

That’s always been my thinking………Until you paint it, it’s still “Joe Sixpack’s” old car. A paint job makes it yours, plus, I’ve always had a certain color/look that I liked. That being said…..the last car I rescued from garage queen status left my shop in “Satin/Flat Grey” color.
