Did you find a project car to buy? If not, I have a 1979 Agitator roller for sale for $2400. It does not have engine, steering wheel or fuel cell (but it does have an original Agitator aluminum fuel tank that should be acceptable for autocross.) It would include spare wheels, an exhaust header, and some other miscellaneous spares.

I have a cool Formula VW based Autocross, Hillclimb/track day Sports Racer in Sac/Northern California if you are interested. Sports racer with Air cooled VW engine. 4 speed trans. Basically a large Formula Vee with a stainless Steel Formula sports racer body and Modified late model VW front suspension, and a 2000cc Type 4 VW air cooled motor. Built to run the West Coast autox/hillclimb events as an A Sports Racer. Quick car at 850 lbs.

Always best to meet as many vee guys as possible before diving into a purchase.
Here online, as well as getting out to several races to see the options.
Throughout my involvement I've personally known several (and heard countless) stories of buying cars that were "race-ready"...some even from reputable guys in our groups...only to find themselves stuck with a hacked-up mess that needed re-working or complete re-building.
It's definitely exciting to get started in this but take your time. It'll be worth it in the long run.
