Default Now in the F500 family

Woohoo! Just bought a 1986 Red Devil F500 car and it's being shipped to my place in Tampa.

Thinking about possible mods... If I want to bore the spare engine to 600cc and slap it in, is that possible?

Also, I've seen travel tires that look narrower and I kind of want a set of 2. What is the wheel size for traveling spares, both tires and rims?

The frame is under diameter for road racing, but hey... I wish to augment the frame diameter for the loop. Any suggestions how / who to reach out to in order to get that done?

Any feedback on these question, guys? Any wisdom would be sweet for this greenhorn, newbie.

    Skoot!

    Default Gcr

First WELCOME! It's a fantastic class and tons of fun!!

I'd strongly suggest you read/study the General Competition Rules (GCR) here: GCR - April Updated.pdf (connectsites.net)

You aren't allowed to modify the motor. You can upgrade to the 593HO if you're looking for the most competitive 2 stroke, but you can't bore the cylinders to "make it a 600".

The wheel and tire sizes are specified in the rules as well. If you're talking about tall skinny wheels to get in and out of the trailer easier, and your wheels have the 4 bolt pattern, then Honda "donuts" will work well for transport wheels. I got 4 from a junk yard for free years ago and they did the trick!

The GCR will tell you the roll bar requirements - I don't think you can just add to the bar, but it isn't too terrible to change the main hoop. There's also a height requirement, the "broomstick test", bracing, ... Oh, and make sure you put it on a surface plate before you cut the frame. Otherwise you'll hear a "DOINK" and you'll never get it back to square. (ask me how I know...lol)

The folks here on ApexSpeed are a great resource. You're in the right place!

Welcome! I've been racing F500 since 1995 and still love it.

Everything George wrote is 100% spot on. Apex is a great resource for everything formula cars. I come here every day. You may also want to join the SCCA F500 and FModified FB Group.

Hope to see you at the track!

    Hello,
My name's Dan. I too just bought a 500, a Red Devil. I'm looking over the GCR rules sent in your other reply. I'm definitely going to be looking to make upgrades and updates to my car. Good luck in with the engine and chassis mod's!!!

    Hi George,
No idea yet!! I live on the southern Outer Banks of North Carolina. Maybe 4-5 hours from both VIR and Charlotte. I'm still trying to find where and what type of events I can even enter. Autocross is my likely starting point.
I'm in the SCCA and I've reached out to other vintage sanctioning race groups to see if I can run a vintage event. I'd love to go to Lime Rock one day.
Any suggestions are very much welcomed.
    Nice to meet you, George.
    Thank you for your reply

If you want to road race, you’re not terribly far from Carolina Motorsports Park (CMP), Roebling Road, and Road Atlanta. All are fun tracks. There’s a school scheduled at Roebling February 21-23, if you want to jump right in! The Southeast Division has a strong regional racing championship series, tons of auto cross opportunities, and hill climbs, too. Easy to find a place (or 2) to enjoy your new car! Here’s the web site: www.SEDivRacing.com

    Again…WELCOME!

Thank you, again!! I'll look at the SED for SCCA and sign up. I'm very happy to get out on the track vs. only doing autocross.
I've been to Road Atlanta for the Runoffs but never to Roebling nor Carolina.
I can't thank you enough for this lead and info.
I have to replace my fuel cell, as discovered last night. Any suggestions other than ATL? Fuel Safe or others?
    Dan
