    Default ID these gears

    Hi Guys,

Got one here that has me stumped. Never seen them before.

    WEBSTER MK4 SPECIAL gear sets.

Full .750" wide, standard needle bearings, standard dogs, standard layshaft spline.

Gears are wider than the needle bearing favoring the flat side not the dog side. Odd, can only figure they had to run no more than 4 as you'd not have room for 5 in there!

Odd 1st gear also with needle bearing inside the driver.

Boxed sets here given to me. One dated clearly 1973.

Any ideas? I was thinking maybe a sand drag car??

Looking for a home for them if someone can figure out what they go to!

Well, doesn't really answer the question but, VW Jetta's had what was known as a Mark 4 transmission.... could they be???

I doubt it..the fundamental design of this stuff screams VW/Mk tranny. Same dogs, same needle bearings, didn't check the layshaft but it looks right.

Total mystery. I'm trying to get hold of Taylor if I can round up his number now. Told he moved to CA.

IIRC the mk4 box used the VW pinion shafts and the hubs locked together instead of splining to the pinion shaft. A lot of MGs, FIATs and others used mk gears in their racing boxes. Could be from one of those.

    I'd buy into that.

Forgot the Mk4 had the dogged hubs etc. Sadly there are no hubs here to do more research, just gear sets. The idea however could be the reason for the odd first gear driver which has a roller bearing inside it.

Looks like 1st gears with integral reverse. For some very low ratios that was required to have a gear that was strong enough. That was especially common with MK5 gears.
