For sale: 1990 Reynard SF90

The "I am sad to see her continue to sit" sale:

Long story short, I purchased this car from the gentlemen at Westroc in the spring of 2008 and ran it in a couple of practice sessions that season. I couldn’t have timed my foray into CFC worse. Soon after, I started grad school (i.e. had no time); started a family (i.e. had no time); and continued the game of life. Every year I mean to clean the car up and get it back on track. Every year it does not happen. So, unfortunately it is time to sell.

The good:

1990 Reynard SF90 Formula Continental race car Serial Number 01-001 chassis;
Ivey 2.0L Ford Engine; techno wheels; LD 19 rear brakes; LD 20 front brakes;
triple adjustable Fox brand shocks; ceramic coat exhaust; MSD 6AL Ignition; Taylor wires; Bosch distributor; cockpit adjustable rear sway bar and brake bias; stainless belly pan; rose joints and heim joints (new in April of 2007); updated body work, etc.
Spare Parts consisting of: original Reynard nose and side pods; two “stock” diffusers; two element rear wing; spare collection of front wing elements and end plates; mounted rain tires on Compmotive wheels; two radiators; selection of Central Division/Great Lake region track gear sets; and more…

The bad:
Engine has not been started since 2009. So essentially, this is a non-running car. The battery will need to be replaced. Also at last start-up, the water pump seal leaked. I have a brand new pump in a box ordered from that same time-period and stored indoors. Before the vehicle was stored, I changed all fluids, circulated the new fluids (hence discovered the pump leak), and put stabilizer in the fuel. However, it has been sitting for almost 7 years. Also, the fuel cell is up there in age and it definitely needs new belts.
In other words, this car should get a complete refresh. However, since the last rebuild, I literally only ran it in 2 practice sessions before real life took over. So it was pretty fresh at the time of storage.

At any rate, I have rambled enough. I will post some pictures this weekend.

Well well it finally appears. I and my guys ran this car for maybe 3-4 years before this sale. At the time it sold it had won CENDIV and the GLC championships as well. It finished in the top three in points I think every year. I know it never finished below fifth if we finished. That car LAPPED an Atlantic at Gingerman and he was not having a "problem". Before me it was a car run by AIM who now do Pirelli stuff.
Personally I would love to have it back even though it probably needs a lot. Great car when we had it.

Thank you for the input, though I feel somewhat ashamed that I wasn't able to continue her legacy, I hope someone on this forum is willing to take baton. Glad to see Westroc is still around (you might notice in the pics that I left your team sticker on the car) :D

I did the setup on this car for Jim @ Mid-Ohio in 2007 and it drove so well he got so excited forgot himself and spunoff !! This car has all the best parts including the Fox shocks. Yes it does need to go to someone that will put it to good use.

I only see two Master Cylinders, does this car still have the mechanical clutch cable?:confused:

The clutch master is as standard on all 87-90 FC Reynards, inside the car under the drivers left leg.

To all that came to look at the car this weekend, I just wanted to say thank you for coming out. I was reminded of why I wanted to race in this group to begin with as it is a genuinely good and interesting group of folks involved.

That being said, although there seemed to be much interest, there have not been any firm offers - so the sale continues...

Wholey weirdness, Keith! I never heard that and both our '89 and 90' Reynards had all three on the outer side of the bulkhead. Sure looked like they had been cast and machined that way.

How did you almighty know-hows modify them so neatly and in original form, it just have been very tight down there around the left foot. Was the master to the left of the clutch pedal??

You must have forgotten, but your Reynards only had two masters cylinders in front of the bulkhead. There was no mounting point for three.
The clutch pedal had a rod attached, that went back to the top of a lever arm. At the bottom of this lever (other side of it's pivot) was the push-rod for the master cylinder itself.
All this was under your left leg !

After speaking with several folks "in the know" (or at least a little closer to FC community than I currently am), I have decided to lower the asking price to $8,000.00. Thanks again to all that have interest.

The "trick" was, you needed to use a short push-rod going into the master cylinder. After that it was easy.

Too good of a car for that low of a price.

The problem being that at the current sale price, it will probably be about $14K to get it on the track. :( Once you go through the motor, add updates, rebuild brakes, fuel cells, belts, etc., etc. you'll be in some serious money.

Understood.

I meant a $10k operating budget plus the car.

Doing regionals and/or test days would accelerate the learning curve and avoid mega expensive pro rentals.

If it did not work out the Reynard would still fetch $9.5k

I'm not scoffing anyone. I just don't think spending what PF totaled as $14,000.00 for a track ready race car (if that's is all it really takes) as "serious money".

I was responding to the $10,000 budget post. I didn't want a newbie thinking it was a $10,000 project.

And, yes, to me $14,000 is serious money. :) Especially when in the last few years race ready Reynards have been selling on Apexspeed for ~$10,000. Myers nearly perfect car was a great example.

They still are the best bang for the buck. One can't turn a 1:30 at Road Atlanta any more economical.

I am trying to say, a father/son/friend combo could give it a go, with a car like the REYNARD, put all the maybees to bed, and NOT break the bank. Give the kid a shot and go from there.

Have ti agree with you there, Frog.

My son sold his TWO back in 2011 for $12,000 just for a quick sale. Of course, he paid $6,000 for the TWO of them. I tried to get him to ask more but he really wanted them out of the garage.

There's absolutely no logical reason for last generation Reynard's to be that inexpensive. They are a fine handling car that is really easy to set up and work on.

Depends. It usually requires some form or extended ramp from the door, but it is feasible without transport wheels.

Was more worried about the wheel width between the trailer wheel wells. Also would I really need to re-build this new of a engine, or can I just replace the water pump?

I would at least have someone who knows what they are doing pull the engine apart and check everything..

Valve springs almost for sure will need replaced due to sitting in one spot for so long.

It really depends on the trailer width. An 8 footer will be fine, but anything narrower could be challenged depending on the space between the wheel wells.

None of the transport/paddock wheels I've seen will make your car's max width any narrower, the reason being is they have no offset and therefore the outside of the tire is usually about the same distance outboard from car's centerline as your racing slicks. Their purpose is to raise the ride height of our vertically challenged formula cars to improve the chances of getting them on or in a trailer without hearing those horrible scraping, cracking or popping sounds.;)

Ahh, ok then I should be good on both fronts (ramp and 8'). Will this sale come with that sweet car stand, speed jack, and any other needed formula stuff?

Car is already in Michigan. IMO, the best way to get this one ready , would be to have it delivered to Averill. Then have him go through it. Few, if any, in the USA are better with Reynard knowledge and prep.

ok, while I wait to hear back on my offer, I will need to rebuild calipers, the three MCs, the engine head, new fuel cell, harness and battery. Anything else you guys can think of?

How badly are the rotors rusted? After sitting so long they should probably be replaced. Check all cables for freedom of movement, including brake bias adjustment, throttle, rear anti roll bar. Do you know how the coolant system was stored? Be sure to check the radiators for both leaks and flow across the entire cores. In truth you should plan on tearing the car down and going through everything. I'm currently doing so on an 86 that had been sitting with many surprises just from the lack of use.

While many may think that pointing out all the work a non race ready racecar will need is a good thing to do, it may be EXACTLY WHY so many cars are sitting idle. IMHO you are not helping to get formula car fields full again. Just a suggestion.

I guess I'm a little confused by this comment, since someone who has made an offer on the car asked for assistance regarding other things he might consider doing, it wasn't an unsolicited opinion. Also, isn't it more likely that the car will return to the track if someone goes in with their eyes wide open? I hope to be competing against this car next year in the 86 Reynard I'm going through that hasn't seen the track in just as long.

Neat, I will be running with MC (if my offer is excepted). Also everything you had mentioned seems pretty easy to do and not a bad idea to check. Rotors look pretty good in the photos, but do you guys always replace and never turn (due to spec racing reasons)?
I just sold my class champion, Gingerman record holding custom car that I fully built and prepped. Not scared to work on something that has no doors and weighs half as much as the last platform. I love to tinker. In fact I would rather a FM, but cant afford any part of something like that.
