So, lets assume you do one freshening and one heavy rebuild per year on a real race engine -that is about 25-30k per year, or about 4% percent of the total budget. The point is that the quality of the racing experience is way better than 4% for both the driver and spectator with a real engine, one that also generates some technical interest and on going development potential.
