frustrating fuel pumps

My car had a Facet Posi-flow 60106 on it. Low enough pressure that no regulator was needed. Lasted far, far longer than their metal pumps - more than 10 years. Started weeping where the case is joined, so I bought another pump through Pegasus, same part number. Put it on and I immediately had mixture problems. Called Pick, called Ivey, was about to change the jetting and then I checked the pressure.

Old pump was 1.5 psi. New one is SEVEN. I just kind of glossed that over, buying the same part number and all.

I'm guessing the new pump was overpowering the inlet valve and float, leading to my rich condition, which of course, was worse at idle. Cleaned up at WOT as it burned the fuel down faster.

Counting my lucky stars I didn't leave the pump on long enough to overflow the carb and either hydrolock the engine or start a fire.

I'm guessing I need the FEP-04, which goes to 4 psi but deliver 10 gal/hr. The FEP-304 at 7 gph looks a little weak for a FC.

Anybody else use these?

When I was running Facet pumps with a Weber 32/36 I always ran a regulator.

It could be done but complicates an already tight area for packaging.

I'm just amazed that Facet makes two pumps with the same part# and vastly different specs. Pegasus alludes to this in one of the other variants - that the specs changed drastically a few years back.

The specs show a max pressure that is equal to the min pressure of the pump you're running. I have not measured the pressure but we haven't had any problems that required any diagnosis.

Good to know that the 4psi will work.

Also, when you google Facet 60106 you get pumps with several different pressures and rates. Aircraft spruce has a warning about using them on certified aircraft. No ****! Can you imagine, even on an experimental, installing one and having the issues I had?

We ran facet pumps with our 1000cc kawasaki zx10 bike motors running keihin flat slide carbs. Originally, we ran a holley adjustable regulator. When we put grose jets in the carbs we could eliminate the regulator as the grose jets were able to control the extra pressure. The regular pump in the bike put out maybe 1.5 psi, just slightly more than being completely gravity fed. So Grose jets, if you can find one, might fix your problem.

I forgot about those. That's a good idea. But I have a low pressure pump on the way.

rick, this ep42s is what ivey is using now. I have been using for 2 yrs and eric inkrott just started using. No issues. specs say 2.5 psi min and i think like 20+ gpm. About $80 on amazon or walmart. I gotta believe these are going to be more reliable than facet but don't have any data.

Definitely more reliable if its production car based, as long as it's somewhat vibration isolated. Only other issue I can think of might be lubricity, as AVGAS is pretty "dry". Lack of lubricity killed the fuel pumps in a couple of the turbine Indycars in 68, but it looks like you've got a couple of years out of them already.

I have been running the pumps that Todd is now using for 5+ years. No failures so far. I usually put a little Marvel Mistery oil in the Avgas.
