Hey everyone,
ive recently discovered the f1000 cars and want to get into it. I’ve got a big background in motorcycles, karts, dirt sprint cars. I plead ignorance on this question. I have searched but no results. Can I convert f2000 car to f1000? I’m looking at buying a late 80s Reynard if this is possible. Besides the obvious drivetrain work, what else would I have to do if the donor car is updated and fairly sorted out?
The conversion has been done many times over. Go back about ten years in the search engine and Carnut169 did a fine conversion.
Should be a lot of threads on the subject. Mostly Van Deimans and Pipers.
Jay Novak (posts here often) produced the Novacar kit.
Most are done on more modern chassis.
Converting a Reynard will be a problem because of the rocker arm suspension and the way the chassis is built just forward of the engine.
Pushrod suspensions are easier to convert and package in the new bits in the rear.
The Reynard is probably not a good base to convert to F1000. You'll pour a ton of time and money in it, it won't be competitive, and you'll never get a decent fraction of your money back when it comes time to sell.
I recommend you find one of the Van Diemen Novak conversions already built.

Some of the Reynards have uprights and rocker arms that are hard to find spares for.

Thank you all very much for the quick responses. After a bit more homework and guidance from a few members here i think its best not to convert the Reynard to f1000. My goals are simply to do some track days at COTA and TMS as well as a possible pikes peak run in 2020. At this point i think it might be more reasonable to just run the car in its current form of an f2000 and possibly do some vintage racing if i want to get into a bit of a competition race with it. I’m a shoestring budget racer and $18k just isn’t feasible right now to throw at a toy. I do appreciate the guidance and responses. I hope to run into a few of you guys at the track!
There is an 84 Reynard that runs at Mosport in Formula Libre with a Hayabusa in it. Its not a big dollar car.
