Default New Generation Seating Beyond Bead Seats

Motorsports Southwest is now proud to be offering the next generation custom seating solution that replaces two part foam and bead seats.

MSSW offers the EIS SFI 45.2 Foam Seat Kits to the club racing community.

This is a much quicker easier system to make a custom seat than either 2 part foam or bead processes.

Advantages over 2-part foam or beads systems:

    - EIS conforms to SFI 45.2 standards

    - The curing is rate is slower than 2 part and provides the driver more time to position in the seat

    - The curing rate is MUCH faster than a bead seat. Sitting time is less than 10 minutes.

    - No vacuum required

    - No noise to deal with

    - No high temperatures generated like epoxy can do

    - Easy trimming

    - No messy beads or bead residue all over the shop

    - EIS initially flows in every space around the body and then expands, making a highly conformal insert. Much more conformal than beads.

    - EIS does not require replacement after impact.

    - The kit is slightly more expensive than a bead kit but when factoring in your time and aggravation and the SFI approval you will find it is less expensive overall.

You can make a seat in 20 minutes and have it trimmed and covered in a total time of 1 hour.

Contact Motorsports Southwest for more details, a brochure and pricing information.

There were prices before I started editing the pictures into the website tonight.

I guess I just learned I shouldn't edit my own website.

    I will get it fixed.

Send me an email address and I will send you a flyer with prices.

    Default ???

How do you use this in a formula car with no actual seat?

Your instructions seem seem to infer that this has to be adhered to a seat or similar structure. I currently use a 2-piece (divided vertically) foam insert that fits in front of the angled fuel-cell bulkhead and around frame tubes, shift linkage, etc. There is no seat other than this. It is removable so that access is possible to body fasteners, fuel filler, front of engine, etc.

I'm in a similar situation. Does it go in FC like other bead or foam seats ?

I used a large kit; VD RF00 and I'm 5'11, 155lbs, 30 waist, it was the correct size... the 'girthier' among you might require a smaller kit because you fill up more of the available space. You will also need 1/4 or 1/2" SFI 45.2 foam sheet for the bottom and back of the seat; IIRC the kit includes some sheet material, I ordered extra.

For further reference my inseam is ~30" and my ass is contiguous (that word's for you Mike) with the battery cover with very little material between the two; not a particularly desirable characteristic of my seat I know, but I like to scooch down in the car as much as possible.
Leg length is def a factor in how much void there is to fill behind your back; my legs, relative my torso, are kind of stumpy so my seat is pretty thick in the area behind/under my back, also the back of my seat doesn't go much higher than the pointy part of the shoulder blade so there is nothing up around the outside of the shoulders.

    Default Weight ?

Does anyone have a comparison of the finished weight of this seat..... say compared to a comparable bead seat ?
I need a new seat, but am reluctant to add any more weight to the car.

    Thanks.............Gary

Gary, I'd not sweat the weight. If this seat is proven to be better than a typical bead seat, you're not gonna care, if and when the time comes that you need the seat to perform.
The RF98 and up are pretty narrow at the hips and shoulders, so not able to build a really big seat unless the driver is tiny.
My seat in the RFR is MASSIVE compared to most that I see, and after what transpired at the RO's, I'd not have it any other way...

I just built some head surrounds using this SFI rated foam. It's fairly light weight and expands 10x volume.

I would put it at about twice the weight of typical bead foam/epoxy mix. It weighs approximately 3 lbs. per cubic foot.

It will be a pound or heavier than a bead seat. But we can also take your EIS poured seat, use it as a model to scan and machine a seat from the same material but it will be about 30% lighter.

Also a guy 6' 185 used an XL for an FE.

Email me for a capacities chart for each size if that helps.

Has anyone built a MSSW seat in a CF yet? As another posted questioned, I'm curious how it came out in a Crossle cockpit with no seatpan to build it in.

I did the seat in a Crossle 40F. It turned out great. Taped thin sheet aluminum along the side of the chassis tubes to keep the material from oozing around the tubes.

Followed all the instructions and was very careful to cover whole car, etc, but ended up not spilling a drop. Really does set up in 5-10 minutes and trims with the carving knife very easily.

Seat easily comes in and out without having to split it down the middle.

I am 6-3 190 and used a medium kit. If I was doing it again, I would go with a large kit...

Yes Scott, please post us some pictures, especially if you took one after the prep and before the pour. How much of the cockpit did you tape off (from the belly pan to the upper frame rail?) and was the cockpit completely empty prior to pour, ie just the fuel cell between the bulkheads and nothing else or did you build a wedge under your legs first?
Thanks for any further info you can provide, Troy

Just loaded up for a race. I will send some finished pictures after the weekend.

The cockpit was completely empty. I already had an aluminum cover over the fuel-cell which protected the back, and I put aluminum on each side just inside the frame rails. Nothing in the front. I have a fairly large fire bottle that works great as front support. Not much room in the front since I'm pretty tall.

A friend took a couple of pictures during the pour, which I will try to send, but imagine the car completely covered with plastic, and a large plastic sheet on the floor. We even extended the seat bag with another two garbage bags to make sure we had plenty of over flow space. That really wasn't necessary... if anything we probably could've used a little more material.

We didn't really need all this cover since the pour went very smoothly, but you never know. We did rehearse it once, which helped.

Scott, one more question. After prepping my cockpit, I can tell I will need more foam than you used since I want the seat to go to my knees in my Crossle 40. Do you think you would need 50% more (Lg) or 100% more (XL) to accomplish this? I'm 6', 175#.
