    Default Jim 'Red Dog' Howard

    Gents;

    Received this email today:

    "How are you doing ? Hope you slept well last night? My family and I came to United Kingdom for a short vacation unfortunately we were mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed, all cash, credit card and cell were stolen off us but luckily for us we still have our passports with us.

    We've been to the embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and we're having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills.

    I need you to help me out.

    Jim"

    So I immediately supported his effort with a Western Union Draft for $3k. Hope you Fellas will do the same. Good people.

    Humbly Submitted

    Default Without casting aspersions towards either real person,

    this has all the earmarks of an email scam.

    Can Reddog be contacted in person to verify the email, I wonder?

    I received the same e-mail but only sent $500. He's not that good of a friend anyway.

    He had stopped in the shop, not that many weeks ago. I had no idea he was in that poor of health.
    My condolences.

    Gents;

    I visited with a family member, and Jim became seriously ill last week. There apparently was no immediate diagnosis as to what he was suffering from, and after five days, his systems simply shut down.

    I first met Jim a few years ago when he bought a gearbox from me. And as you would surmise, a couple of RVN 'lifers' immediately hit it off. We regularly communicated by email and visited on the phone, discussing racing of course, and just about anything that flipped our switch.

    Jim, by trade, was a superb machinist for the Air National Guard, and his passion was racing as well as his 'El Rancho de Pacifico'. I am bereaved at his untimely passing, and shall miss him greatly. So long, Pal.

    This is very sad. Although I did not know him very well I did spend a day with him when he picked up a chassis and some racing stuff I sold him. We talked about racing but lots of other stuff too like life and things he learned along the way. He took notice of how hectic my life was that day and reminded me to slow down and try to enjoy the things most important. He said "take time to look into your kids eyes" and the way he said it really affected me . I would bet that almost every day when I get home with my head spinning from all the things I've done or have to do I pause and make sure I actually look into my two boys eyes and give them the utmost attention they deserve and each time I do this I think of Jim. I always wanted to shoot him an e-mail and thank him for that but I guess I'll never get the chance.
    May he rest in peace.

    A LOT of Euro hotels still take your passport when you check in. Will only give it back when you check out or, go on excursions.

    But then many do not any more.

    Thanks Rick, Kea, and Tjcezar.
    It's nice to hear some kind words about my step-dad.
    I'm not the best at using words to express my emotions,
    my siblings and I are all in shock.
    He didn't want us to know he was dying, didn't have any messages for us.
    Why didn't he go to the hospital?
    My biological father was murdered when I was six, and Jim raised me.
    I've got an awesome work ethic and have no fear about making many repairs around the house thanks to him. He taught me so much, I still watch Nova on pbs most weeks and think of him.
    It's really hard to loose two dads.

    Jessica
