Default SCCA at Circuit of the Americas! Mar 7-9, 2013

Just saw some info that there is now a confirmed date at COA with the Texas region for Feb. 22-24, 2013. It will be a three day double race weekend with entry fees in the $500-600 range which is comparable to what Barber cost this year for the three day Labor Day event. Still waiting on confirmation on what type of race, but the assumptions going in was a Rational. With almost all of my family living in Texas and they have never been able to come to a race, I'm already making plans to be there. The 24 hr tow each way will be a long haul though!

    Coop,

Better read up on Texas law first. I don't think they allow doppelgangers in Texas.

Some Texan race car owners could make a decent profit renting cars for drivers wanting to fly in. This could bring some dusty cars out of moth balls.

I probably wont go because the local guys always have that home track advantage. :-)

coop's allowed in by waiver under the kindred spirit law. you just need to sign an affidavit stating you own 5 guns or more and have no qualms utilizing our 147gr criminal restraining system. don't know if i can make it though. that 1 hour and 15 minute tow is a killer

Default EPIC tow for almost everyone.

Wow, a high profile SCCA race at COTA in Austin......great news.

It would be an EPIC tow from Eastern, NC....but pretty tempting!!

Link to 1st ever laps @ COTA. Video's include the Classic JPS Lotus driven by F1 Champ Mario Andretti and Jerome D'Ambrosio in a modern Lotus Renault chassis.

Any idea if it will be the full course? I see the V8 supercars will be using a shorter course than the F1 race. Not that it would matter, it will still be an awesome track.

I would love to be at this race but its on my wife's 40th birthday and I have already been working with some of her friends from out of town to throw a party. Hmmmm, how can I get out of this??? Any ideas?

That is one of the benefits of the bigger trailer I bought since it can haul two cars. I will definitely team up with another car and driver for the haul out there. If we both have a crew member with us that is four people to drive assuming everyone is comfortable pulling a trailer. That is what Clint and I did for the trip to Daytona this year. Even with the detour through Atlanta to pick up Clint it was cheaper than driving straight there being able to split the cost. Hopefully I can find someone a bit closer to Charlotte though. Maybe Brian Quinn and his FB. He is only about 15 minutes from my house.

Austin is a great place to stay downtown and celebrate a birthday. Stay at the historic Driskoll Hotel. Not cheap but it's a birthday! And you get to race at COTA.

Best restaurant in town in the hotel. If you like music, there is plenty here.

How far is the track from downtown? Is Austin a good place to bring the wife, will she enjoy it? (or is it so good we're better off leaving them home? lol)

Without traffic the track is about 15 minutes from the Airport. Airport is 15 minutes from downtown. I think some of the shuttles to COTA operate from downtown.

Austin has a ton of great restaurants and music. Any kind of food you can think of and any kind of music. Cultural events, shopping from weird stuff to high end stores.

There is the Domain for shopping and eating huge Outlets about 30 mins south on I-35.

Lake activities, parks, food trucks, many different kinds of bars. There is plenty to do during the day or at night.

I went skiing in Utah back in my single days and met a girl from Austin. Drop dead smoking. She came up there to get a little skiing in and some fly fishing. Drove up in a dually pickup. Drop dead smoking. She described Austin as the "Oasis of the south". Its a pretty cool place to visit. Lots of stuff to do. Did I mention she was hot?

UT-Austin has a student population of about 50,000. There is a lot of good talent attracted to UT. Many of them like Austin and stay after graduation. This creates a skewed concentration of demographics.

FYI- The UT system has right at 100,00 students.

Right Now the race is going to be a Double National. There is a good chance that it will be made into a Rational. The race will use the full course. But everything is always subject to change.

If anyone wants to bring their wives to Austin, or girlfriends, there are a number of "VIP & rub elbows with the drivers and celebrities" events here.

You'll want to confirm both the existence and the dates of the event before making travel plans. The latest date I've heard (from Lone Star Region's Competition Director) is the March 8-10 weekend. Format (Rational, National or Rational/National) still TBD, but it will be a double.

Default Never Any Time To ..........

... vist the local city during a race weekend BUT - this is one town/city you should try. Very vibrant, lots of college kids and all that it entails - music - clubs - reasonable priced eateries -- etc.
Had a chance top spend some time there - "Austin Weird" - a NOT just a bumper sticker - it is a way of life ( sorry Gov. Perry - but I am NOT sure it really is a part of Texas !!!)

Bridge bats ( and they used that to name their minor league hockey team) are examples.

So, where do you [safely] leave an RV and trailer full of 'easily-converted-to-drug-money' equipment while you see the Alamo and dine at the river walk?

The Alamo and Riverwalk are only about 60-70 miles away from Austin. If it happens it will be an amazing event.I would expect over 200 cars.I'll bet almost anyone who has a car within a days drive would show up.I may even have Formula Fords to rent for that race.

    Steve,
If you were ever to travel outside of Ohio for a race and if you were to go to the race talked about here, than you could drive right through Buffalo, Texas and see Tom on your way to Austin.
