Ford pledges support for FFord
The British Formula Ford championship will receive assistance from Ford of Europe from next season, which could lead to the creation of a new formula to be launched in 2006. Despite the current Zetec machines being carried over into next year, Ford will consider the options to overhaul the regulations ahead of the following season through Ford Team Rally Sport. One possibility could be to change from the unfavourable Zetec 1800cc unit and revert to 1600cc engines, with either Ford's increasingly popular Duratec or Sigma powerplants. The move is understood to be as a result of Ford of Europe's chairman Lewis Booth attempting to stave off the increasing possibility that the category, which has run continuously since its inception in 1967, would not continue in Britain next season. Among the benefits for the championship in 2005 will be the provision of on-event hospitality, professional branding and a television highlights package that will help it compete with the well-backed Formula Renault and Formula BMW categories. The series is set to remain on the British F3/T - Formula 3 and Touring Cars package and will continue to be run by Racingline.

I know this story is about FF, not FC, but it raises some questions. Might Ford throw some support towards the USF2000 Zetec series to help against the BMW and Renault (if thery are still around in the U.S.) series? What is the "Sigma" engine? Length, width, weight, bolt pattern? Is the Sigma engine something we should throw into the continuous thrash about a new FC engine? What is so "unfavourable" about the 1800cc Zetec they're using? It's winter now, the garage is too cold to work in at night, let's speculate.
