    Default James Garner

In addition to Grand Prix, he did a really fine documentary call The Racing Scene that followed his racing activities in 1969. Motorhead for sure!

Never met the man (walked by him at Mid-Ohio one year at the CART race) but he always came off as a gentleman, on and off the screen.

    His best line ever:

"Scott put Scott where he is."
Lola: When four springs just aren't enough.

Garner was a pretty amazing actor and person - super talented, and very nice in person - not full of himself at all. One of the "old school" of actors who could do everything - westerns, comedy, drama, romantic leading man, you name it.

Grand Prix was the start of his love with racing - he had never driven a race car until that movie, yet it didn't take him long to earn the respect of drivers like Jackie Stewart as a totally natural talent - Jackie told him that if he wanted to change his career, he could be a very successful F1 driver.

Sad to see talent like him go - very few current actors come even close.

Decent tribute to the movie here:

I'm probably not the only guy who grew up wanting to be Jim Rockford! Loved most of his films, especially Grand Prix and Victor Victoria. Along with P.L. Newman, a celebrity who lived a humble life.

My favorite scene from the Rockford files:

Garner is in his POS Camaro tailing a blonde driving a 911 Turbo. She finally spots him in her rear view mirror, downshifts and makes a quick turn onto a hilly, twisting road.

In other tv shows, the hero would have chased her down. But Jim Rockford just pulls off the road and sighs.
