    Default I'm In!

Looks to be a fun weekend. When's the last time you saw 19 Sports 2000's at a track at once?

    Default History in the making

You can be part of history.
This year the Fun One is run for the 50th consecutive year. Its also one of the largest regionals still left and last year the Finger Lakes region did a great job with things like registration (Thursday night!! Good idea) Speedy tech). The event is in a great place, the weather is usually good and the view down Seneca Lake is fantastic from even the paddock but better from the grandstand.
I’ve talked with a couple of our drivers and they are waiting to register pending car repairs. I say don’t wait. Let race chair Chris DiMinco know what he’ll be hosting to make history.

Default Wish we could make it

Wish we could make it. It looks like Chuck and I will be at Hallett that weekend for a test on Saturday with a young lady that's looking seriously at running FST next season. At only 18 she's an experienced racer and if everything works out I expect she will be running Hoosier Series next year in her own FST.
Next year I do want to run The Glen as well as most of the Hoosier Series.

Default Stories from Fun One history

I was reading FLR historian Lynn Randell’s brief history of the 50 year old Fun One and three interesting stories stood out.
First in 1968 the race had 184 entries and its name was the October Speedfest. The Saturday night party was held at held at Seneca Lodge and featured German food and Bavarian melodies from the band. It was felt that party brought in a lot of new faces in 1969.
In 1969 and event occurred which would have created a crisis with the NASCAR group that runs the track now. Starter Bill Moran had his toes run over by a race car. He had four broken toes with tire tread marks to boot. He could have won an award for the most involved starter of the year.
The third point of interest was the breakdown of drivers especially with SCCA current issues.
Youngest 21 (Minimum age then), Oldest 56. Average age of the winners 30.7
    Occupaations of the drivers
    Engineers 26
    Salesmen 10
    Music merchant 1
    Pipe fitter 1
    Dental technician 1
    Research scientist 1
    Florist 1
Who knows about the rest of the entries
So see you at the Fun One -- The starter will be in the stand
You can read Lynn’s whole article in the August Top End available on line at FLR-SCCA.com

I'm in. This is probably one of the most scenic tracks,(and drive to the track), around, with a rich history as well.
    Don't miss this opportunity.

Count me in boys. As soon as SCCA notifies me of my license number I will be completing my registration immediately.

Looking forward to having a run with you guys.

Is anyone planning to do the Friday test session?? I'm hoping there will be a couple of cars out there to show me the way around??

    Regards Shane

We are really grateful that you made the effort you did. Working between you and Sam was time zone overload for me what with Sam in Prague and you in Victoria. Anyway, we are all going to learn a bit from each other I’m sure. For those that don’t know much about FV in Australia there is actual leadership being exerted by organizers. Very different than what we see.

We in the world VWAC racing community have a lot in common and we need to keep our eyes wide open. So come over and say hello to Shane and have a beer. Importantly, Shane is both a driver and in a motorsports business. That’s a great combination.

    Default I sort of entered

My car is entered but I am not, kind of leaves me with an empty feeling.

BUT, I am very excited to see what my car, the now #6 Joust Racewear Special, can do in the hands of Shane the self proclaimed token Aussie!

Shane will be in the excellent hands of Ted and Chris at the Glen

    Default Trailer Ready!

Matt and I just declared the car to be trailer ready. Can't wait to load up and head to the Glen.

Kind of last minute, but I've heard of a young driver named Kimberly that may be looking to rent a car. Does anyone have one available?

    WGI Sunday Race

Will edit in details, but the podium is:

    Doug Seim
    Rob Clark
    Shane Purvis

Here is a quick report from Rob Clark:

Quick race report...tough race lots of the usual. Seim jumped out to an early lead with Podgorski McSherry Clark chasing. Podgorski retired with engine issues. McSherry spun after contact with Seim. With one lap to go Seim spun leaving Clark with big lead but Clark's engine blew 3 corners from home and as he costed to the line Seim passed him for a 0.6 sec wining margin. McSherry recovered for 4th with Blevins in 5th followed by Gordon and Dawson

    Default Crazy Last Lap!

We enter the 90 on the final lap with a waving yellow. Two cars spun, one across the track, everything still moving. Rob threads through, I'm figuring to go to the left, the car moves left, I have to try to pinch down, back end steps out, going to the gas means hitting the car. Snap spin 180 giving me a nice view of three cars that miss me (thanks guys!). Yank the wheel to bootleg turn another 180. I wind up on the left side of the track, facing the right way, with the engine running. Dig around for first and take off trying to hold second. Put in an OK lap and what do I see out of the final turn? Oil smoke? Rob crawling along the wall! You just never know what's going to happen!

Never think it's over! Too bad the weather was not the best, but it sounds like the racing was good. WG in the fall...classic!

    Default Aussie does really well

I wrote to someone else after watching Shane Purviss prepare Sam’s car for the race that "he was a real racer". He was totally methodical, did one thing a time --adjust the clutch, tweak the alignment with a string box, work on brakes and so on. Here’s a picture of him downloading his data and video which he studied after every session.
Remarkably, he applied his Joust Racewear stickers with his SCCA card in about 10 minutes per side.
Thanks for coming and joining us Shane, and thanks to Sam for sharing his car.

On the way to the airport we talked about some techniques the Australians use to bolster their very strong fields. More about that later

To the RGU team and Matt Gordon for all the help this past weekend. Without these guys my weekend would have been a lot shorter.
