    Default FF 1600 starter motor

What are people using for the Kent 1600 starter motors?

Does anyone have a model number for the denso starter?

    Default Marc Bushman

Marc is an electrical engineer who supports IMSA pro teams and builds/modifies Denso starters by 'hardening' them to survive life on a Formula Ford. I've been using his starters since I started racing. I ran 5 seasons on the starter in my car. I'm sending it back this month for him to refurbish.

Marc's starters eliminate a lot of frustration.

The easiest number to look up for a Denso starter is 16262, if you need the common Swift/Van Diemen/Reynard type unit. This was originally fitted to the Toyota corolla from 1975-1980'ish.

Other useful part numbers are: 028000-4950, 028000-4951 and 02800-5140. The Toyota number is 28100-26110.

Depending on what car it's going onto, be aware of where the main positive and solenoid contacts are. These vary on otherwise similar motors. They can be moved but it's easier to get the right one to begin!

The most common fault with these is wear on the main motor contacts. This tends to show as poor performance, juddering/jumping, burning, etc. They are easily replaced - kits come as either just the two flat contacts or can include the solenoid core too.

Image attached of a worn unit, pre-rebuild, from my Van Diemen RF86. This was around 30 years old and is still going strong!

My old swift used a dense/bosch unit described in this thread https://www.apexspeed.com/forums/sho...e-that-starter

The starter is a Bosch SR111X out of a Toyota Corolla (75-79). Very easy to rebuild. the last time I needed a starter I just purchased a remanufactured unit and swapped over the parts I needed.
