    Default Tilton 5.5” pressure Plate

    Gents;

    My new QS long rod is equipped with a minimum weight flywheel, machined to accept a Tilton 5.5” clutch assembly.

    I purchased a new Tilton grey spring pressure plate assembly recommended for cars producing up to 250 lb-ft of torque, but I need everyone’s advice if this is the best path, please.

    Default Grey springs

    Rick, I had Taylor replace my 5.5" PP with new springs and they put the weaker springs in back when they were in business. It didn't have enough pressure. It slipped and I had to send it back for the stiffer ones. It was for my FF. I would have to call Scotty Young to see what color the weaker springs were. I think they were Grey. I wouldn't use the softer ones again. Don't know if this helped. Good question though!! Wish I knew before I installed it... John FF69

    Default Spring

    orange is softer, then Grey and then double grey
    Gray is fine for FC - what we have used for years (and I was one of Tiltons bigger distributors at one time)

    Gent;

    Good stuff here. This is mine:

    Almost a flat black, but probably closer to double grey. Thoughts?

    Default Spring color.

    You do understand it's the spring color, not the cover color, they're talking about?

    Phil;

    Judging from my photo, may I presume my PP is a double grey?

    It is not the pressure plate that is the concern here , those will be either High ratio or Ultra high ratio.
    It is the spring . They are rated in colors that are etched into the finger of the clutch
    Grey will be have a torque capacity of 250lb-ft with a release load of 850lb..
    I re-spring these with a White spring 150lb-ft with a release load of 480 lb
    A Grey spring clutch will destroy the main bearings on a 1600 in no time at all

    Single disc 5.5
    White=150lb-ft 480 lb release load
    ORA = 200lb-ft 510 lb release load
    GREY =250lb-ft 850 lb release load

    Mains or thrust bearing? I think you mean thrust bearing. The mains shouldn't care about a load along the crank.
