Default Another question: Hewland vs Webster Nuovo High-Strength

Any opinions on the quality of these gears? These Webster gears are a bit less expensive, but how do they hold up?

    Thanks,

That's what he also told me this morning when I placed my order.

After having a Webster fail and the resulting bill for a gearbox rebuild you don't save money using them.

Supposedly Webster has 2 levels of quality/strength, I can't remember how to tell them apart but the one that failed on me was the better quality. I would never ever use a Webster of any variety in a FC car for 1rst and 2nd. Maybe 4th with the high strength version but that's about it.

Maybe in a FF the Websters would be tolerable.

    Default Websters vs Hewland

I have even broken Websters in my LD200 in my Honda powered FF.With a F2000 Zetec or Ford motor I would not chance it. The torque is too much for the Webster
gears especially if there are any bumps in accel areas.

    Gents;

I believe a quality Cryogenic treatment will help in any application. I suggest dropping a PM to Mike at Stonebridge to get his professional expertise. I did sixteen gear sets a couple months ago, and I believe he charged me $25/set.

    Default Hewland vs Webster

When asked this question in the past, I answer, " no one ever calls looking for used Webster gears".

    Default Webster failures

I have failed several Webster gears, mostly S series, in my Formula Ford. Never failed a Hewland gear, regardless of indicated quality series. Have been slowly migrating my gear inventory to Hewland M series over the last decade or so.

    Default Webster

Back in the FF days with the California version of Webster they were a cheap alternative that gave little to no issue in FF (the only place they were really used).. However Scotty's ex boss decided to try to go head to head with Hewland with a revamped webster and it just didnt work. They are fine in a Club Ford and Vintage FF but thats about all the risk I'd take today.
Not everything they did was bad - we sold an awful lot of Webster stuff over the years but they were marginal in FC even back in the early 90's.

I have had both Hewland and Webster break over the years, nothing is perfect. Unfortunately the new Hewland gears don't seem to last as long as they used to either.

It's a gearbox and even in a FF mileage on parts is not unlimited.

Correct.... I only do Hewland .
I am the #1 importer in the US on Hewland .
I thought real hard about this 3 years ago when I started SYE.
And decided I was not going down that Webster road.
And I believe I made the right decision.

I've always been curious about Webster's origin. Just somebody who decided to copy Hewland, or did they have an "arrangement" of some sort, or what?
