    Default Recommendation? Robust chassis, fat tires?

    Hi,

    Hoping for some guidance. Looking for a $7000-20,000 car that is robust in design, fuel injected, fat tires. I know that the fat tire cars get EXPENSINVE fast. As I know little about these cars, please advise. I would like to race it in VARAC (Canada vintage racing).

    I am not Fangio, just having fun.

    Also, I do my own work on cars. Thanks for any guidance.

    You might be able to sneak up on an old club level Formula Mazda on the upper end of that price range. Fat tires, wings, stout chassis, can run it in VARAC, reliable drivetrain. Carbureted though (I think?). But great value for the dollar.

    Can't think of anything else that would fit your criteria, but outside of that would encourage you to think about Formula Ford (because its pretty much the bee's knees as far as I am concerned).......

    Also, FM is a popular class in Formula Libre races (at least at Calabogie). The advantage there is that you would have cars that you could race with on equal terms.

    I will start looking at the recommendations.

    How competitive are the FF's in VARAC or Libre?

    This may not fit into a vintage class (since the drive train has been converted), but might fit in a Formula Libre class (and it has fat tires!).

    If you want to be competitive in flibre you are going to need a much faster and expensive car.

    Formula Renault, stohr etc.

    Unfortunately libre is just that a free for all. Atlantic's running with formula fords lol you haven't a chance.

    VARAC looks similar with just three groups. Looks like a wide gap in performance levels.

    And that is an argument in favor of FM. Even though Formula Libre (aka FFE - Formula F***ing Everything) is a catch-all group, there is a solid number of FM cars. So, you have your own private group-within-a-group, all equal.

    No FI or fat tires ..... but in Ontario and Quebec, the only real stand-alone class is FF/F1600. Buy a Club Ford. Between vintage, F1600, and Formula Alphabet/Libre, you can race at any event on the calendar. That is assuming you want to "race'. If you want to "lap" or "drive fast', then probably the classic FM best fits your description.

    Club Ford is a great choice in Ontario, leaves you the option to go to a ton of races states side as well.

    Currently several cars have been restored in Ontario and have been competing or are ready to compete next year.

    The other option if you want to run a properly organized championship is Toyo Tires F1600 Championship, Class B is a great place to race there for an affordable amount of money.

    Welcome James. Your budget will get you into FF1600 (Kent). The Toyo tire is the only cost effective route I can see. Low 1.30's at Mosport. Reasonable entry fees, pump fuel and no need for dedicated 'rains' all have merit. Plenty of help always in the paddock. 3 races and a very reasonable test Friday option ( 5 x 1/2 hour sessions) run by Mosport.
