I’ve long wondered what effect that had on Willy T. It was absolutely awful.

Spare a thought, too for the young marshal hit by Tom Pryce. Dreadful.

Considering Grosjean himself thanked the marshals, that should be good enough. I find it a bit rich for so many to endlessly want to make race driving dead safe for drivers choosing to do it — in this case for a lifetime of wealth, and while making it so safe as to be pretty boring for spectators — and then rail on safety workers often working for nothing at all.

Their safety should be considered a huge priority over the drivers getting all the good parts of the sport, especially when only they typically do.

Tell us all where I said it was an effective technique at extinguishing the wreckage already aflame?

It was 100% effective at accomplishing exactly what I proposed he was trying to accomplish as his primary goal.

No. It was not. As already explained.

Ha ha. Guess I missed the part in the video where the fuel vapors in the air and along the ground reached those hot bits and pieces on the ground, ignited, and subsequently engulfed the carrier of the squirt bottle as he approached the wreckage.

I don't know, but I do know he has to shoulder much of the blame. The ground rules for that chicane at Vancouver was if there's a yellow the cars should shortcut it to avoid blockage. If you watch the (horrible) video, several cars go past the bottom of the screen using the shortcut before Willy T. arrives.

I'll have to ask Ross Bentley someday how he dealt with being the cause of the incident start.

One other little note: they pulled the entire corner team off and replaced them with folks from other corners. The blue flagger they put in (and who was in full view the rest of the race) was wearing a big "NO FEAR" shirt. That was the beginning of the end for advertising on worker shirts as well. At they they were generous giving us all PPG and CART hats so we matched.

My recollection is Yes, Willy played a part. Hence, hard to live with.

Wasn’t the worker somewhat hidden by Bentley (inadvertently)?

Without having to watch the video again, there were way too many workers pushing Bentley's car, Ribbs did stay to the inside (even though he shouldn't have been there) and when Bentley fired the workers scattered in both directions depending on what side of the track they were working. The young Quebecois kid ran into the side of Ribbs' car and the rear tire slammed him to the ground. I don't think Ribbs ever saw him.

The next race I worked at Portland, I wore a full face helmet all during the CART race.

Thanks for sharing those tough memories — and for putting yourself out there in the day.

You may know a couple CART buds — subtly — Joel and Brian. The former was the last to close the CART HQ door, and the latter collected bits and serious injuries at Michigan in a Lanier crash.

You guys can’t possibly get enough Thanks. Personally, if retirement funds and security seem overrated, I hope to soon do that from a cockpit.
