I'm pretty sure it has to be somewhere already (YouTube, etc).

Post 40 here talks about embedding into a post but it was already a YT posting:

There is a film icon in the post buttons. Click the button, paste the YouTube link in and you're good to go.

A you tube link is not an mp4 video file, hence the question - if I have an mp4 video file on my hard drive, is it possible to post it directly somehow? So far, I see no way of doing that.

Probably easiest to create a YouTube account, upload your video to that account. Then you'll have a URL for that video which is easy to share, even here on Apex per dc's post below, i.e. "there is a film icon in the post buttons. Click the button, paste the YouTube link in and you're good to go"

Easy peasy. Below just did it for one of my YouTube Videos (first firing of an engine after a complete rebuild of the car last year.)

Nope, like Robert said, it needs to be a link from a YouTube or Vimeo account for it to work on the forums.

It wouldn't be feasible for a site such as this to start hosting video files directly. The amount of storage that would take would be cost-prohibitive.

Thanks - that's what I expected to hear, and all I needed to know.
