NOW what are you building ?
From memory...'99+ VD is 102" And yea, what are you dreaming up?

The monster VW is telling me it is lonely in the shop.... and now i have all these build tools...
Maybe something faster, lighter, yet street legal. Colin Chapman is one of the heroes...

I know where there is a Berkeley sitting..... When originally acquired had a kaw 750 with a pull start. Didn’t matter which gear you started, would burn up those little 10” tires.
I'm thinking i need to start with something with a VIN number and valid title. Makes the process of making it street legal a 100x easier.
Maybe somewhere around 1 hp for each 4 or 5 pounds, The bug is 1500 lb. 192 HP. Thinking lighter than that. Must be mid-engine of course.
Got an idea...

You "sort of" can if it has a VIN plate that is pop-riveted in place. And you live in a small rural county.
You just need a notary to confirm the VIN number on the car matches the title.
Now, if every time you junk a old car you keep the metal VIN plate and the title in a file cabinet in your shop....
But don't over do it. A 63 VW plate won't fly on a 63 Chevelle.
Is this a VIN plate in Florida? [emoji6]

One for the what is in your desk drawer this morning file.....
I know a fellow that took a Lotus Europa frame and suspension, installed Lotus 23 bodywork, Hart modified twin-cam with dumbed down cams, and a Mk9 Hewland. He dubbed is Lotus 23E, still has the Europa ownership and the VIN is tucked away so you can't see it with the body on, sports a chassis plate on the dash that says 23E/1. Silly project, 1000's of hours, looks and sounds just like it should. The looks he gets wailing down country roads, priceless.
Mike,
Get away from needing a faster car for the street, put your technical and mechanical abilities to a FX beast.…
You can easily satisfy your quest for power to weight numbers and actually RACE the thing.....
You can never drive a fast car correctly on the street, you know that…..
Back in the dark ages of the late 1960's a guy named Chuck Kirkbride in Pennsylvania stuck a Ford V8 of maybe 289 size in a flimsy Lotus 21 frame designed for a 1.5 liter four cylinder motor and won the Northeast Division Formula A class.....
I suggest you discuss this with the Captain.
You already have the trailer and tow rig....
I'll talk to Janice and clear the way.
Think Rule 20.
VIN plates are not that hard to make in your shop. Not that I would know anything about that
Ed
FX race car don't need no stinkin' vin plate….
Rand,
Not much into doing something that has already been done better. Easier and cheaper to just go buy a Swift 016.
Besides, we are seeing a dying off of formula car racing... how will my grandkids be able to sell off a non-standard FX car?
Unique is what i seek.
Ken Hoovler
Sort of the direction i'm going... but from 50' away i want it to be confused with a production car...
I could sell you a slightly damaged Bowman frame real cheap you could use as a starting point. 100 inch wheel base with the Bowman suspension but of course you could change that.
Ed
Probably going to start with a complete car. Then I won't have to re-invent the wheel. I'll already have dry sump systems, suspension, steering, pedal setup, fuel cell, yadda, yadda. All that had to be custom fabricated for the VW, and takes a ton of time. I'm already past 70.
I can jack up a zetec or fit or ? to ~300 hp. Will just have to baby the gearbox.
Still thinking...
Being that i am over 70. I should just buy a new Vette.
or 488 Ferrari.
Or buy a Miata with all the nitrous you could use for the rest of your life!

This might check all of the boxes: mid engine, fiberglass body and in Florida.

I'm designing around those short 91" wheelbases.
At least its longer than a Lancia Stratos.
A LD200 may not handle the extra HP but there is a company in CA that make transaxles that can handle a lot more power. Build mostly for the off road crowd. But sure could be adapted for a street car
From the Photon FB car. Pick up that 23B and stuff a turbo'd Hyabusa and limited slip diff in the back.
Less than 1000# with you in it.

hint: I always liked the middle driver seating in the early McLaren F1 road car...
I have to sit on the left side of the bug... not perfect.
besides no one in their right mind would ride with me.
Start with an old Fiat X-19. Technomagnesio used to make nice magnesium wheels for the racing ones. I think 8" x 13" fronts and 10" x 13" rears. Build your tube frame sports prototype and drop the body work on.
Or save a lot of trouble and start with a basket case Europa. I hung on to one of those for about 10 years before I had to clean up the yard. I figured even with a full cage sub 1350lbs.
I'm thinking Europa with something like FM underneath.
Or ...FWD drivetrain moved to rear like a SR3. Sidewinder engine may make more room for driver within 91" Europa wheelbase. Lots of power options for riceburner FWD drivetrains.
I think you should build a Morgan 3 replica and post the build diary here, so that I can learn from all of your trial and error.

You are likely talking about these folks:
http://www.mendeolatransaxles.com/transaxles.html
There's a Brunton Stalker on BaT (Lotus 7-ish). LS V8, purled front suspension. Has CA VIN. This thing is crying for a Watson Indycar body transplant....
or Weddle..

I had them REM a few gearsets for me.
