"Britain's new 3 billion pound warship has a leak

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain’s biggest ever warship, the new 3.1 billion pound aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, has a leak and needs repairs.
The 65,000-tonne ship has an issue with a shaft seal which was identified during sea trials, the MoD said.
The Sun newspaper reported that the 280-metre (920-foot) warship was letting in 200 litres of water every hour and the fix would cost millions of pounds. "

    wow.

One of the Captains we had on my Destroyer opened a 10" hole in our hull one day. We were in Kaohsiung, Formosa taking liberty when we got an urgent call to return to Vietnam immediately and swiftly. The Captain took us out of the harbor and turned south. There was a Typhoon going on and within 3 hours of entering the BIG BLUE he had pounded us so hard into the waves (totally uncalled for) the the hull opened up in the forward boiler room floor. So much for that trip. Back to Kaohsiung and in to dry dock for repairs.. sigh.

But a leaking shaft seal is actually just as bad.

All this talk of leaking seals on shafts with lots of seamen around. That could be a real nautical disaster, good thing we are getting rid of grid girls!

Leaks on a prop shaft seal never get better.

They don't want the sea water getting to the bearings.

Was anyone really surprised that a seal on something British is leaking?

This is the exact reason all our new Freedom/Independence class and Zumwalt class ships aren't getting deployed right now either.

Is it just me or do water cooled oil / bearings sound like more potential problems than solutions.
