    Three time AMA and two time USAC Champion Joe Leonard passed away a couple of days ago at the age of 84.

    Godspeed to Joe, condolences to his family and friends.

    I watched the race with the STP turbine Lotus on TV, got to see him win the Cal 500. Great racer on both two and four wheels.

    Proximity time wise to John Surtees's death is worth noting. Both were the only champions on both 2 and 4 wheels on their respective sides of the pond. Unlikely to be repeated in either case.

    Both very versatile drivers, not many like them .
    John Andretti, who is battling cancer is the most versatile
    American Driver in the last 40 years, We meet in Formula Vee
    went on to SSA RX7, then big Time BMW gtp wins
    Indy car wins, Nascar Wins , even Top Fuel wins.
    Lots more wins in all types of cars.
    He has more wins in him as soon as he recovers.
