Default Looking for info on this 70’s era Merlyn MK25

Posting on behalf of someone who contacted MoHud Region SCCA:

"Hello, I have restored 70’s era Merlyn MK25 and I believe it was raced in the NY state area. I have no history on the car prior to it being raced in the Midwest. The car no longer has an ID plate on it so I was looking for possible information from the regional SCCA archives. I have attached an old photo of the car as it was raced on the east coast. I don’t have any information on who took the photo. Wondering if there is someone that could help me out. Best Regards, Jeff Hess"

    Thanks - EJ Smith

Look for an SCCA number stamped on the roll bar and not too far from a 3/16" hole. Should be XX XXX or something. The first two numbers are the region and the remainder are the vehicle log number. Then you can contact the region and ask them to look in their archives for the info. That is what I did and found a wealth of knowledge on my car. Good luck.

Default Looking for info on this 70’s era Merlyn MK25

Thanks Gentlemen. I am the person that contacted MoHud. As the number stamped on the roll hoop is 71-17W, I have sent an inquiry to the Watkins Glen Region (#71) to see if they have any archival information on the car.

This is the info that I received from Watkins Glen Region. No other info beyond that.

    Jeff,

You are correct that the car was issued its first logbook by the Glen Region SCCA. The ‘17W’ means that it was the 17th car that the Chief of Tech at the time (Ernie Walden, that is the ‘W’ means) had issued a book for. Regions unfortunately are not required to maintain records on the books issued, and many regions like ours have very sketchy records of that era. I believe Ernie Walden became the Chief of Tech in the late ‘70s, early 80’s. He just recently passed away.

That is a bummer he passed away. He probably took a wealth of knowledge with him.

SCCA introduced stamping on roll hoops and log books in 1972.
Glen was a fairly active region, and even if many of the cars that took part in their races got stamped somewhere else, earlier in the season, I'd expect them to have to 17 before the end of 1972 or 1973 at least

Is it possible that you've got an older Merlyn frame updated with Mk25 bodywork? [Mk25 was 1974 production]. That was fairly common procedure; you could check with Merlyn about differences in the Mk25 and earlier frames.

    Good luck with your search

    Chris
