Hewland MK9 question...

Hi folks,

This is my first post so please be gentle!! lol

I just just purchased a '78 Crossle 32F and started going through the car.. OK basically taking it all apart. One thing that I can't figure out is what the purpose was for this massive boss welded to the back of the Hewland case..

Any ideas???

That was my fist quess but not sure why you would mount it on the gearbox... I though it would be mounted to suspension points for it to be more effective...

For how beefy it is it would certainly support one.

suspension mounted wings more or less outlawed in the late sixties as i recall

you do know that your FF never had a wing so probably the rear cover to the gearbox had been replaced (common LOL)

i might be completely wrong however

Hmmmmm.... Winged Crossle, wonder what class that would be eligible for??...lol haha

If it serves no functional purpose I'll probably see about surgically removing it.

Could it be a rear tow point? I don't know if I would pull mine from the rear cover however.

i would just buy a "new" cover because you never know when you may want to add a wing

Those were my two guesses, in that order. But when I thought "tow", I was thinking winching it into a trailer as a one man job.

I believe the former owner was a "master kite flyer" that used that as a point of attachment to see how high they could get the kite to fly at various ground speeds, example: 5,10, 15, mph, etc. simulating actual wind speeds. Unfortunately, they discovered at 80 mph the back of the car would lift off the ground and they would lose control of the car...just like the guy gridded next to you in your first race. Be careful.
