Anyone read The Art of Racing in the Rain (if not you should if you are a racing and animal lover). I see some parallels in the commercial and the book. BTW there is rumor that the book may be made into a movie................

I would explain the nerve it hit for me but that would be the long story of putting a "normal" life on hold for 20 years while you chased a dream of driving race cars for a living and nobody has time for that!

Using Turn 1 at COTA as the final turn heading to the finish line was actually a much more dramatic shot than if run in the normal direction. And it would make perhaps one of the most visually dramatic last-corners around.

I wish I understood everything I know.
i'm an old guy so i'm sure i'm not in nissan's target audience,
i can't understand how they think that will sell cars.
the sound you hear is me shaking my head.
proof of oldness.....

Count me in with the haters.
I thought it was beyond stupid, showcasing us racers as selfish morons who would drop EVERYTHING at the drop of a hat, including family, and brand new babies, evidently, just to ink a contract... Hmmmm, wait a second!
PS I was home from USAF Basic Training and drove by a smoking hulk of a Volvo on the LIExpwy - I later found out it was Harry Chapin who had been killed. Taken too soon, an amazing talent...
thanks for that. couldn't remember his name.
indeed, a fine talent gone too soon.
saw him in concert here, many years ago.
I just watching the commercial again. I just don't see how people are looking at the commercial so negatively. Plenty of brief clips of the dad reading to the son, dad sad because he missed the first steps, dad kissing his son as he puts him to bed. I guess it's all on whats on your mind when you watch it I guess.
I race communist race cars.

Damn!
And after all these years I thought it was Cat Stevens that wrote that song...
Hated it an said so when it was on.....same reasons everyone else has already stated plus one more: As usual, the guy was way better looking than most of the goofballs I know.

i liked it... i think it makes sense, ad is all about drawing parallels that sell emotion. clearly they have succeeded otherwise no one would be talking about it.
the message is "you sacrificed, you played hard, you are successful, andt in the end you are a good guy and do the right things so buy nissan" the other part of the message is "we are serious about racing, just like porsche, buy a nissan".
its a very well made commercial!

Growing up in racing this commercial really caught my attention.
It was a good commercial. It made me really happy that I got so lucky to be raised in racing. I'm the luckiest girl in the world because I share it with my Dad. In reality, I wouldn't mind being just like my Dad.
Thanks Pops.
Way to go Nissan. Making badass racers tear up everywhere.

Well, I missed it... Was in the shop machining race car parts for a paying customer... Yes, we were at work on Super Bowl Sunday...
the late '80s and early '90s were busy times for me - pursuing my weekday professional career and trying to live the racing dream - weekdays @ work 7 'till 7+, SCCA FF in the db-1 (my dime), getting some quality IMSA GTO/RS/GTU endurance drives and doing the full series in Central America (others $) and getting some recognition
- came home on a weekend and saw Jason playing neighborhood street hockey with his sister Steffie as the goalie - I didn't even know they skated !!! - huge hugs and back to the game -- walked in the home - but felt I was in a house - went into our den thought about my goals the family needs, my children's future and the price I was paying - too high - finished the '93 season told my wife, " ... its time" - put the swift in deep sleep ("You'll never know Deb, maybe Jason will want to drive it some day... [she just smiled])
Directed the $$$$ to private school, difficult but..... and coach travel hockey and assisted in softball (Deb often the Team Mom) for the next 11 years --
All the ad did was make me think of my personal watershed moment and the self evident decision I made - Me? I loved the ad - - its designed to to make think, self analysis - start a discourse - evoke emotion - quantify the roles of father, husband, provider and personally, reenforced my decision. Well done Nissan you not only build cars, your involved in the "...human race..."
Thanks, Papa G - You are very convincing and have opened my eyes a bit wider...

In the world today we racers need all the non tabloid exposure we can get if our sport is to continue. Some of the complaints about this commercial remind me of an old saying. "Due to all the complaints about the free lunch, there will be no more free lunch."

Count me in among the folks that got pretty misty-eyed at that one. It tore up my wife pretty good too
Gave my 14-month old little boy a (another!) big hug right then and there.
