    Default Throttle cable

What do you use as a throttle cable and housing.
    Thanks. Mike

    Default CABLE

    Mike:

Stock (braided) cable works fine if you do not try to use the carb as the throttle stop.
"Cheap" at $5 and long enough to fit any FV . You will have to modify one end to suit your needs, but that usually is not too difficult.
A covering is also available- a bit heavier and thicker than what you would find on your bicycle brake cable.
Need help, just call or e-mail.

    Hope this helps.

I use tandem bicycle brake cable. Cheap but like Deitmar says, have a throttle pedal stop to prevent stretching and breakage.

I also use tandem bicycle cables but in Stainless steel. They are a bit larger in diameter then the standard bike cables.

Actually there's also control cables.com with an s. Ask for Vic. Veteran cable guy.

Be very careful selecting a cable. A run of the mill bicycle cable is asking for trouble. Still racing motorcycles after 30 years and I've seen many cable failures with Oem cable. They wear out quickly and start to fray. Moisture inside the housing will rust a cheap cable very fast. Many times you can't see or feel it happening. Only takes a loose strand to jam a cable. You do not want a race car with a Wall Mart throttle.

If you've ever had a stuck or partially stuck throttle at the wrong time you'll quickly get the picture. A broken cable might not harm you, but a jammed one could kill you. The throttle is the most important control on your investment. It's your life. C'mon, how much does a throttle cable cost?? Get a quality cable.

This is not the ProRacing section or the Formula Atlantic section. This is the Formula Vee section. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a properly installed and maintained throttle cable using bicycle brake cable or materials obtained at your local hardware store. For the price of the shipping on the "proper" cable, the budget racer can have a spare too. Considering the short throw of the carb linkage, and the packaging requirements of the cable (winding through the exhaust and oil cooler, or jammed up against the firewall) I have found the simpler version preferable.

So, am I to infer that a FV does not need the same reliability or quality that a pro racer or formula atlantic does? I guess the V driver won't be as disappointed, emotionally or financially, if he misses a race or a weekend due to a failed cable.

You get what you pay for.

    Infer what you like.

Three respected experienced FV racer/builders (before me) all recommended the same approach. In my case, I found that once I stopped trying to use expensive "proper" cables and went with the cheaper, simpler option, I got improved throttle action and improved reliability. Considering the obstacles involved, building proper linkages to use "proper" cables is challenging and not time friendly. That I can spend $5 and replace it, at the first sign of problem, is a bonus.

I use "proper" cables in appropriate applications.

We replace the throttle cable every year, before the start of the season and carry a spare. They are cheap and easy enough to replace. It has proven to be just a simple precaution. We seldom have race weekends with inclement weather, it's usually only when we go back east, so those who do, may be required to replace more often.

Here is where I purchased all my cable parts until I switched to push/pull cables.

I had a throttle cable get stuck in a vee, it was one of the typical $5 ones everyone uses. It was Two years old I didn't race a lot but almost every session was in the rain.

The best cable you can get is a morse cable. They are used many race cars in boats including salt water boats in extreme conditions. The cable functions just as well when you're pushing or pulling and they are extremely reliable.

Not sure why you'd replace a throttle cable every year unless your worried about a failure?

$25 for a reliable cable vs a $5 bicycle cable.
