    Default Tunnel Design

Does anyone have practical recommendations for designing a pair of tunnels running from front of car to the start of the rear diffusers? These would be modifications to an SR currently with a flat floor and a rear diffuser.

Is the ideal tunnel width equal the width of the rear diffuser it feeds?

Would tunnels 2” high be effective, or do they need to be much higher to create flow?

Is the ideal tunnel shape as straight as possible from front of the car to diffuser entry?

I’ve probably exceeded the quota of questions here. If you’ve found a book that focuses on “practical aero design” please let us know. Thanks a lot!

The most recent tunnel car I know of is the Swift 016. There is wind tunnel data for that design as well. I would start by taking a good look at what was done by the Swift engineers.

If you just want to buy a new floor, talk to Stan Clayton at stan@dauntlessracing.com.

Agreed. You can also contact Mike Devins at HRP. He has a couple of projects fabricating exactly what you speak of. Also, check the latest reg's as there are limits to what you can do in front of the rear wheels. AFAICR...

Gentlemen, Thanks for the information. I'll check out the Swift design.

We're really looking forward to doing the fabrication once we get the design figured out. No doubt Dauntless would be a fast forward.
