I have just started racing a Van Diemen RF82 and have been considering getting my Hewland transmission looked at and possibly blueprinted. Can anyone recommend someone on the west coast who is good with Hewlands. What do people think of Taylor Engineering in case I can't find a place in or near California. Thanks much, Bill Pierce
Unless you are talking about trying to save money on shipping, use Taylor Race Engineering. Go to Walmart/KMart/wherever and buiy a large Rubbermain bin. Cut some wood that will stabilize the box inside the bin. Use old towels to protect box. Secure with ty-wraps. Ship to Taylor. Talk to Scotty/Dan about what you need.
Peace of mind.

Williams Race Development is in North Carolina, but they used to have a support truck at west coast events. If they still do this, I would guess they'd be at the HSR race at Cal Speedway on June 24th weekend. Great people - would help people rebuild boxes the night before a race.
We have been doing gearboxes now for over 25 years.
Taylor Race has under new ownership since the November 2011, And we now have four CNC machines , a full time machinist and three full time Engineers.
There are way too many new things in the pipeline right now list right .
But I would be more than happy to talk with you about your project Bill.

We dont do so much west coast support since our move to NC, but we still rebuild the boxes and do the track support on this coast.
We haven't got a CNC yet, but we do have Dale Earnhardt Technology group just down the road and they have them, Which leaves us with more time to work on the boxes!
If you want to have a chat about a rebuild we would be more than happy to talk with you, give us a call at the shop, you'll either get me, my wife Heather, or my dad Paul.
We also have a great deal with Fedex on round trip shipping so as long as you have the time any extra shipping costs shouldn't concern you at all.
Looking forward to talking with you,
Lee

Maybe everybody else knows it but I had a chat with Lee Williams wife while I ordered gears. He Designed and built the gearbox for the I'll fated US based F1 effort by Peter Windsor.
I'd say that is a strong sign. Be chosen to design an F1 gearbox? Wow!
Not sure about the F3 but F3/A xx:xx was the designation for the first gear for the Reynard 89/90H formula atlantic gearbox. Proprietary case with Hewland F3/Mark 5 gears. Not interchangeable with Mark 8/9. A call to Taylor should clarify.

The F3A ratios were used in the NST Swift 008 Atlantic box, as well as the Dallara F3 cars before they switched to the FTR trans, both of these were 5 speed boxes.
The shaft on your gears is MK5 size and this would have been used with a dedicated second gear, also designated as an F3A. The top gears, 3,4 and 5 are standard MK5 gears.
In theory, the seconds should fit in an MK box that is fitted with Mk5 gears, the problem is, due to the extra torque of the F3's the gears on the F3A's are a little wider and with the low slung selector position of the MK box the forks foul with the gears on the layshaft during engagement. The first gear shaft wont fit due to a different layshaft front bearing and input shaft arrangement.
Hope this helps,
Lee
