    Default Fly Wheel Question

My father and I race two formula cars in hillclimb and time trial events in Pennsylvania. My father is replacing the Tilton clutch in our Legrand Formula Ford with a standard clutch and flywheel. However, all the flywheels we have are 21 lbs and no machine shop will lighten them unless we tell them exactly where to remove the metal. Does anyone have any idea where to take the metal off the flywheel or where we can buy an already lightened flywheel?

Thank you all for your time!

Do you have any racing-oriented machine shops in your area? Lots of 'em here in Indianapolis. I took my flywheel to Schmidt Automotive and they knew much better than I did how and where to lighten it. Cost me $150 and the machinist said he went through 3 tools because the iron was so hard.

Basically you just remove metal as far from the center as you can, you don't remove enough to weaken it in any spot, you don't leave sharp edges that can start cracks. You spend some time mounting the flywheel as on center and true as possible (I personally dial it in using the mounting face as the reference. You need to get it rebalanced after, the raw castings often aren't very good.

Has someone asked which engine you are using?
If it's 2 liter Ford, just buy the 11 lb. one available now.

    Default How light?

There are aluminum flywheels available @ 9lbs if you want to further reduce the weight.

Jeff at JAE Parts makes and sells the lightened steel flywheels and he may carry the alloy ones too.

Jeff is very knowledgeable about all things Kent.
