More Than A Handful Isn’t A Waste
When most series are struggling to get twenty cars to enter, the F2000 series boasted a 32-car grid at Watkins Glen.
They opened the season with 28 cars and have stayed close to that number prior to the season high last weekend. The category has been around forever – much longer than some of the better known junior formulas – but doesn’t have the manufacturer backing to pay for TV.
The F2000 series has sparked the careers of numerous IndyCar champions and continues to offer strong fields at an economical rate for its competitors. (F2000)
A large portion of the top driver in the major North American series hail from F2000 (FF2000 or ‘2-Liter’ as I grew up on) – Dan Wheldon, Jimmy Vasser, Buddy Rice, Paul Tracy, and Sam Hornish all came to prominence in 2-Liters.
2008 series champ Anders Krohn won the last Star Mazda race at Milwaukee and currently sits 6th in points. Chris Miller, Remy Audette and Matthew Inge have been the standouts in 2009 so far.
Who knows how far Krohn or these three will go, but in terms of picking a perfect series to launch a career from, F2000 is right up there.
