    Default Phoenix Driver(s)

OK....we're not really ready to announce driver names yet, but we're close.

And after many discussions with the 4 drivers we are still talking to, and looking at the calendar for how much time between the ARRC and when the new F1K.09 will be ready....we may not make it....not because we don't want to, but because our goals go beyond just that one race. If I were a gambling man....and I'm really not...I'd give us a 50/50 shot right now. We'll see.........

Like I said, we'll announce the names of the drivers we're going to work with to test, develop and race the new car fairly soon, but what I will do is share some of the outstanding accomplishments that this cummulative group has acheived in their racing careers:
    • 20 SCCA National Championships Runoffs Appearances
    • 15 Runoffs Podium Finishes
    • 4 Runoffs Pole Positions
    • 6 SCCA National Championships
    • 1 SCCA June Sprints Win
    • Experience in FF, FC, FM, FB, FA, DSR and CSR Classes
    • Pro F2000 Wins
    • Pro FSCCA Champion
    • Pro Mazda Wins
    • Several National and Grand National Shifter Kart Championships
    • Former Jim Russell Racing School "First in Class" (CAN)
    • Former Barber Dodge Scholarship Winner
    • Former #1 Ranked shifter-kart driver in the United States (ahead of Scott Speed)
Believe it or not....there's actually more, but my fingers are tired. We had intended to narrow this down to one person, but the more we look at the talent we have interested in driving our cars, we may just have all of these drivers work with us in one way or another.

We had intended to debut the car at the Runoffs, but we're moving right along and we now feel that we'll have the car done in mid-September so testing can begin ASAP.

    More soon.

For those of you that have followed the DSR class for the past few years will not have any trouble recognizing the name of the primary driver we are going to work with to develop the new Phoenix F1K.09….Mark Jaremko. We’re extremely excited and I know Mark is looking forward to driving the car as soon as this season is over.

Due to Mark’s Runoffs commitment for this year, we’re not sure if we’ll be able to get enough testing in prior to the ARRC….so we’ll have to see how it goes. Our primary goal is to build the best F1000 car on the market and we don’t want to jeopardize our long term plans by rushing to race the car in Atlanta. We’re confident that with the addition of Mark to the team, and his extensive talent and experience behind the wheel, our car will be the one to beat for 2009 and beyond.

I’m not going to speak for Mark, I’ll let him post some info if he feels it would be appropriate.

As I stated a few days ago...there are a few other drivers we are talking to that have interest in driving the car as well. Depending on schedules, prior commitments, etc. we will utilize these drivers in our development program as needed.

Congrats to Mark and to Team Phoenix...you guys are really "steppin' up!"

Matt, thank you for putting your faith in me, I will do my best to help you and your team develope the F1K.09. If the car performs on the track as well as it looks on paper we should have a winner.

Yes and no. He is the guy who's car got us thinking, but since he had nothing to do with the work associated with forming the class I'd hate to say he was the "godfather" of f1000. I'm not sure any one person is a Godfather- it was definately a group effort.
FWIW, mine is the 1st "official" F1000 and was built after I had a discussion with Purple Frog who had thought about doing the same thing. I had intended to run FS (and did for a year) when guys like Mike B and Russ M (Sean M, and Rob L were also in that group)started getting us organized. We had many long conference calls to form the rules and submit to SCCA during which many folks were involved. Lee, Matt and Don + others came along after the class became national and they could see the light (and a direct connection to what they were already doing).

    Mike,

I'm just not sure if we have time to pull it off...

Fortunately....we have a few months. Unfortunately....we only have a few months.

We do have a few other options I've been working on too...it really, truly will be one of those "it depends" situations.

A bit of an offtopic technical question - is the larger rad angled to fit in the sidepod more effective than a smaller rad mounted perpendicular to the sidepod to force air through it quite a bit more "straight" for lack of a better term?

    Default Rad angle

I will try to explain the angle as simply and quickly as I can.

There are three areas or “openings” that we are concerned about when designing a cooling system; the inlet area, the radiator core area, and the exit area. We want to have the radiator core area be considerably larger then the inlet and outlet areas. This is because we want to slow the air down through the radiator core. The air doesn’t much care if the radiator area size is obtained by tilting it in or keeping it strait and enlarging the side pod. The angle allows us to fit a larger radiator in a smaller frontal area side pod. If we tilted the radiator in far enough we could get side pods as narrow as the ones on a VD FC.

    Default radiators

Very nice, is there one radiator and one oil cooler?
The core area looks about 150sqin each?
    Do you think that's enough?

    Default Rad size

The radiator core area is 171.25 square inches. That is just a little bit larger then the radiator we used in the F1K.07 and the Malloy sports racer, only about 3 square inches larger. We have not had any problems cooling those cars.

For those that may not know; the core area is the part with the tubes and the fins, excluding the tanks, and end caps.

There is one oil cooler and one radiator; each about the same size.

    Dustin,

To clarify. Are the oil cooler and water rad both about the same size? Something like 7.75x22"?

A few other points from my perspective....

With all the criticism I've seen of the frontal area on some of the new F1000 cars, I want to point out that we have not had any cooling issues....like most others are....and in fact we are able to even close off a large portion of our radiator openings in cooler weather. We've run our car very hard (on a short track) in 100 degree heat and track temps around 140. The water temps were hot...but the car never overheated and the oil temps never exceeded what I've heard other cars are running in 70 degree weather.

The main focus of the 2009 car was to imrove the "high-speed" aerodynamics of the 2007 car. Many of those aero changes have required that we make some chassis changes and packaging changes, but the suspension geometry of the new car is virtually identical to the 2007 car.

We are running an oil cooler very close to that size. We have found one that we will think work pretty well, And is reasonably priced. We want to sell them, as they would be perfect for conversions and home builds, but we need to thoroughly test the cooler first.

Granted, I'm no expert (far from it), but the new Phoenix looks like a great compromise between low drag and cooling. Hopefully we'll get to see it in person at Atlanta in November.

AFAIK, all of the conversion cars have had cooling issues, but I'm confident we will all get them worked out soon enough. Then cars like the Phoenix wont stand a chance. :-). jk.
