    Default Shifter Operation

    Any suggustions/pictures of the gear shift for a push pull cable set up. I have a push pull cable terminated on the engine side but am not sure of the best (easy and functional) way to mount the actual shifter. I am considering modifing my old shifter arm from the MK9, but it will be a lot of work. Any hints/suggestions would be great.

    I used the shifter from my old Van Diemen RF96, cut the bottom off it, then TiG'd the top of it to a 1" X .5" piece of 4130 rectangular tube. The original aluminum knob still screws on the top, and the rodend goes in the rect tube in double shear at the bottom. I used two bronze bushings at the handle swivel - inserted in the rect tubing.

    A picture will probably work better than what I just explained - lol. It took me about an hour to make (but longer to think about).

    I am using the original set up on my RF94 (mainly for cost savings). The push-pull cable is connected to the tube coming out of the back of the shifter. I'm almost done with it. Tonight I am working on a shift gate to limit side movement. I'll try to post a picture tonight.

    One disadvantage to this arrangement is the original ball-in-socket allows slop. However, my gear engagement feels okay thus far (without engine running). It may be too early to know for sure because I don't have clutch linkage connected yet for a more real world test.

    Mike Devins suggested a simple long shift handle anchored at the bottom frame rail. In addition to having no slop. you can connect the cable high or low depending on how much travel you need/want.

    Russ, that approach sounds like the Radical Pro Sport I drove in '05. It shifted very positively, probably due to the amount of leverage provided. Probably not the most elegant way, but possibly the easiest and most positive, ergo, gooder design!

    I rigged up my shifter using my old hewland shifter that slide a tube which moved the push pull cable. It had to much friction in it and did not work. I am now trying to rig something else up, but have a question. Is it easy to use the push pull cable to shift when the engine is not running or is there a lot of resitance? I'm wondering if I have other problems than just a crappy shifting set up.

    Bike engines shift horribly except underway. I take one foot and rock a rear wheel while shifting testing with the car at rest or on stands. It will then shift sorta OK. Push pull cable works very well underway. I've used one for 10 years now.
